This just in, from Didier Briel of the OmegaT team:

The 1.8 version of OmegaT is now released as a stable version (1.8.1)

OmegaT comes with a completely revised manual, including a new comprehensive
index.

Compared to the previous 1.7, 1.8 offers 17 functional enhancements, such as
a long-awaited spell checker. Using Hunspell, the same dictionary engine as
in OpenOffice.org, it allows spell checking in more than 80 languages.

Stability has also been improved, with several bug corrections.

OmegaT is available in 28 languages, including a new Portuguese (Portugal)
localization, and the user interface has already been updated in Albanian,
Belarusian, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, French, Serbo-Croatian and Slovak.

The OmegaT Project always welcomes developers, localizers and users to
contribute their experience, knowledge and insights to the software we
release.

Note that 1.8.1 might not appear immediately on omegat.org.
In the meantime, you can get the latest version from Sourceforge:

Features :) Nov 4, 2008

Thanks Susan for the post.

Let me send a few more bits of information

The main features of the 1.8 series are:

1) a spellchecker that uses OOo's dictionaries
2) more visual info (display source for all segments/mark translated/mark untranslated)
3) better navigation (navigation history to navigate the segments already visited, navigation to matches and back etc)
4) target letter case change (lower case/upper case/caps upper case)
5) source and target length indication
6) improved HTML handling with regexp based specification of non translatable contents

and a few others, including the updated manual.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=68187&package_id=297693

Version 1.8 is the last to work with Java 1.4.

The next version (2.0), a major rewrite of OmegaT's core, is based on Java 1.5 and already comes with a number of major features including:
- on demand matches: matches from reference TMX are not computed when the project is opened but when the translator need them ie when a new segment is opened. That considerably reduces project opening time when _a lot_ of TMX data is used (like hundreds of MB on some systems) and the matching time is still negligible.
- better data indexing for matches, based on Lucene (this feature is still very much for geeks though)
- user configurable shortcuts
- QuarkExpress CopyFlow Gold support
- SRT (subtitles) support

Version 2.0 is already available from the SVN code repository (svn is required to checkout the code, ant is required to build it), but "take out" packages will be available as "beta" versions from the sourceforge site starting in the coming days, but that depends on Didier's work schedule

For bleeding edge amateurs:
