Jan. 13, 2011–OmegaT is a free and open source multi-platform Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tool, with fuzzy matching, translation memory, keyword search, glossaries, and translation leveraging into updated projects. The software uses the standard TMX file format to store and access translation memories.

During the past six months, the volunteer team of developers has implemented many improvements that greatly enhance the effectiveness and ease of use of this terrific CAT tool. The latest version is currently 2.2.3_01.

Some highlights:

  • Trados compatibility has been improved by addition of a bilingual TTX filter, by a plugin written by developers at Okapi (http://okapi.opentag.com/). There is also a new “match statistics” function, which makes it unnecessary to borrow another application to perform this computation, if needed. (This does not imply endorsement of "Trados discounts.")

  • Improved glossary functionality: There is now a quick and easy glossary term creation interface, so that the user does not have to worry about the glossary format, encoding, and file extension. The interface also allows insertion of a term from the glossary into the target segment, with just a right click. The range of external glossaries accepted has also been significantly improved, supporting CSV and TBX formats. Since the release of OmegaT 2.0, the "tokenizer" plugin feature (from Lucene) has enabled fuzzy matches and glossary matches based on stemming, which means that many inflected forms of words will "match," thereby greatly enhancing the matching function.

  • The search function now allows filtering of search results in the Editor, and also searching for dated translation units, author, and date of change, which makes for improved collaboration among translators. The filter enables you to hide recurrences of identical segments within the Editor pane. This can reduce the workload considerably during the checking of highly repetitive jobs.

  • Improved tag management, including aggregation of OpenXML tags (greatly simplifying the "tag soup" that can sometimes be the bane of CAT tool users), and creation of OmegaT tags for external TMX files (allowing better matches from other CAT tools).

OmegaT can be installed on any operating system capable of running version 1.5 of the Java runtime environment. You can download the latest version following the directions at:

The OmegaT Project always welcomes developers, localizers, and users to contribute their experience, knowledge, and insights to the software we release. All work is done by volunteers. Translators are needed to localize the site and documentation, since in many cases the currently available localization has not kept up with major programming changes.

Shortcut comparable to right click Oct 6, 2011

It is faster to use keyboard shortcut, instead of right click. However, I don't find shortcut command which is comparable to right click to insert term from glossary into target segment.

Yes, there is no keyboard shortcut in OmegaT for inserting a glossary match. You can use keyboard shortcuts for inserting a TM fuzzy match, but not a glossary match.
