Yes, a bunch Jul 28, 2008

When I started translation business more than 20 years ago, I purchased half a dozen. They are all outdated and never been used for last 4,5 years.

I use all the dictionaries but not all the books I've bought for reference Jul 28, 2008

Sometimes I'll buy the same nonfiction book in multiple languages as a source of specialized vocabulary (cookbooks, for instance) and I haven't used all of those.

But all my dictionaries have been consulted at one time or another.

If I got them, I use them. Jul 28, 2008

In my case I only have so many dictionaries. I make sure to buy those I feel certain I will go to for reference and so far I've always found my choices to be a source of reliable reference.

a couple Jul 29, 2008

Including some very expensive Japanese-English technical dictionaries, since I decided I wasn't cut out to be a Japanese translator (any Japanese translators out there need some barely used dictionaries?). Also a couple of monolingual English reference books from the cut-out bin that have not earned their $5.00 price tag yet, but I live in hope.

I have tons Jul 29, 2008

I have probably at least 250 dictionaries covering every conceivable subject acquired during the many years I had to translate without the benefit of the Net. They represented a considerable investment, but they allowed me to become essentially self-contained and autonomous. Now, most of my translations, even lengthy ones, I do without cracking a dictionary or using any reference at all.

If I do need help I use the Net, plus a few well-worn dictionaries that can always come in handy, but are not indispensable.

After all, a dictionary is only one reference and usually contains little or no context. The Net is the world's biggest library, and if something cannot be found there, then it just does not exist. And it provides plenty of context.

Possibly - I'm not entirely sure Jul 29, 2008

I have about 100 - most of them I can remember using. I still rely on a few that I know will offer the preferred terms or suggest interpretations that are not immediately obvious. I now tend to use the Internet for searching and hardcover for confirmation or for subtleties/vocabulary that I can't find online (yes, Virginia, not everything has been digitized!).

Yes and no... Jul 29, 2008

I have one dictionary on economics. It's quadrilingual, in Japanese, English, German and French, and when I bought it as a student I was sure that it would come in handy one day.
But - for some reason it has, so far, never once been able to help me. Even though it contains tons of vocabulary, it always fails to list that one word I'm looking for. So, even though I do try to use it, I haven't been able to yet...

I am such a horading rat Jul 29, 2008

I buy anything my eyes fall on - books on translation, linguistics, dictionaries, glossaries - you name it. Being a book sales addict, I end up occassionally with two different editions of the same resource.

And I spend two days a months searching for articles and other resources online. Good stuff ends up on Proz Glosspost; the rest in my Bookmarks.

Use them? Well, not all, not at the same time But the paranoia that I might one day need this particular term is too strong. And when the days are short, and it is freezing cold outside, I play games of "I knew that" with myself. Better than watching TV.

The dictionaries in IT become old-fashioned too quickly. Jul 29, 2008

I have a lot of dictionaries in computing but software changes so quickly that I didn’t use them for years.

I'm surprised Jul 29, 2008

My old ones are the most fun, particularly when they contain specialist vocabulary. How else could I hack 18th-century carpentry or, for that matter shipbuilding? (I work with museums).
