Specialist in what area? | Sep 23, 2008 |
In my specialist fields? Or in translation? The "please recommend" makes me assume the latter, but do over half of us really read specialist publications on translation?

How can you not? | Sep 23, 2008 |
If you read specialist publications, how could you not benefit? I suppose the answer could be "no, I don't benefit, they confuse me", or "no I don't benefit because they sap me of the will to live", or "no, I don't benefit because I find them so engrossing that I neglect to cook an evening meal and thus my partner leaves me on a regular basis". Business and finance | Sep 23, 2008 |
I assumed this poll meant publications on one's specialist subjects, so I said Yes. I find the Spectator's new Business Monthly informative (especially at the moment) and good for picking up voguish financisms. I suppose I should read the Financial Times, but I can't stand all that pink paper. Jenny

Localization | Sep 23, 2008 |
Since I'm trying to focus exclusively on localization, I read a few online localization-related publications. I also recently renewed my subscription to Multilingual magazine. I find them all very useful.
I benefit A LOT from reading NdeT on a daily basis. This great Forum deals with many aspects of our profession in an open and disinterested way. I highly recommend it to every fellow translator. Best, Leticia

I try to read the Economist as often as possible, the occasional term or phrase comes in useful for translation.

[Edited at 2008-09-23 16:28] .....I think people just want the Browniz points for answering the poll question. For anyone who didn't know about it, I think you get five.

For all those kinda "nerdy" translators (like me) who are into all things IT, a website that is very useful (and quite known/popular) to learn about all kinds of IT/technical topics, not only if you work in technical (or software) translation, but also to help you be your own technical support person, is: TechRepublic ( http://techrepublic.com.com/ ), which (I think) is indi... I highly recommend them, in case you're not familiar with them. Cheers, Ivette

I never fail to read "Punto y Coma", the "Boletín de los traductores españoles de las instituciones de la Unión Europea". Each issue addresses some terminological nuance and I have learned loads from our colleagues, the "traductores juristas" in the EU. If you want to take a look: http://ec.europa.eu/translation/bulletins/puntoycoma/numeros.html

I assumed it meant translation publications. I have now joined the ITI, but I did subscribe to the Bulletin, the ITI's own magazine, which appears every two months, even before I decided to join, as it's full of useful translation-related articles. I don't think Michael Benis writes his technology articles any more, but I found them invaluable as an introduction to new technology I didn't even know existed - Google Desktop to name but one.

Dear colleague Niranja, please, try NOT TO JUDGE your own colleagues through who-knows-whose habits. Dear Marie, yes, I think really, most of us are reading articles, as this is a part of the usual/normal professional life, IMHO.
