It depends.
I update it when I have something to add or change. This may occur twice within a month or once a year. I recently added my skype info.

For example, a relatively important interpreting assignment, the translation of a book, etc.
Have a great day out there
Nigel.

I do not use a standard CV at all, because I never apply for any in-house positions, nor do I apply to be taken on file by any of the mass-market agencies.
When I need to submit a quote to a new client (which in itself only happens once every couple of years or so), it is irrelevant what schools I went to, what employed positions I held (with starting and ending dates) before I went freelance. Even my university career is not always relevant. My subject expertise for the job at hand is far more relevant, so I am far more likely to write about the type of jobs I have done, the specialist dictionary which I helped to develop, the CPD courses I did in legal translation, the state translation exam which I took in 1994, the fact that I can certify translations for courts in Germany etc. This means that no two "CVs" are the same, because when necessary I simply compile the facts that are relevant to the specific quote.

...and the need to add some big new development or project to start wooing new customers.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year on the last poll of 2011!

I don't update my CV any more, as it was written to gain employment. As a freelance translator, I don't want employment (unless the salary and extra remunerations are particularly high), I want assignments. For that end, I update my website regularly, to show clients and prospects which assignments I have completed to date.
The last update to my CV was when I changed my website, because when agencies ask for a CV (only fair to see which walk of life I have had so far, it might give them an idea of my business personality), I want them to have a look at my current website, not my previous one .

Maybe I should update my photo because I picked a new and apparently wrong hair color product and not even Photoshop can match that glowing, radioactive orange...

I don't. Some time ago, I managed to whittle it down to one page, which I think is plenty. I no longer respond to requests for a "full CV" unless I am convinced it is REALLY worth my while. Requests for degree certificates and similar bumf get short shrift too, as I don't know where they are, although my mum probably has the originals somewhere.
