Music and translation go hand in hand

I listen to TV in the background, the volume mostly low while I am translating or writing my blogs or some paper. I used to listen to Pandora a lot while working for a software company.

I started listening to Pandora internet radio about a year ago...it is FANTASTIC. You can create your own radio station based on a music genre, an artist, or even a song. Then you can "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" if they play a song you don't like, then it remembers that and fine-tunes your custom station even further!
I've created a station based on some smooth jazz (Paul Hardcastle, Dave Koz, Ronny Jordan, etc.) mixed in with some groove (Four80East, Little Big Bee). The rhythm is just enough to keep my mind energized without putting me to sleep, and the volume is kept fairly low.
Funny, I don't listen to this type of music at all in my spare time...I'm a rock and roll girl!

If I am writing something (translation or other original content), I need the music to be instrumental, no lyrics (they annoy me). At the same time, I listen to different songs and genres depending on my mood and the time of the day. The more upbeat I feel, the more BPM (beats per minute) the song tends to have. Funny, Shannon, I love Paul Hardcastle, Koz, Ronny Jordan and many others of the smooth jazz persuasion. Pat Metheny keeps me grounded on “thought music,” but I will not listen to Kenny G or to any noisy Central American music.
It is interesting to me that we tend to enjoy music that has a certain flow (whether rock or classic) and beauty and elegance, even chaotic elegance. Same thing can be said of the flow, elegance and coherence we seek in the translations we write.

Not while translating

For translation and proofing, no - I have the window open so I have ambient nature soundtrack in the background. While doing administrative jobs or research or other auxiliary jobs like word count, checking file conversions, preping files for Trados, layout of final files, etc. then I listen to news programs on the radio. Music I reserve for my spare time and I almost never watch TV in any case.
