No specific preference. It depends on the season and my mood, but I do not like staying in one place, I have to move, that is why I love cruising and every trip has been a delight...

It depends on the season Jan 23

Hello,

As Teresa and Lisa have said, it depends on the time of the year.

In summer: the beach! As few people as possible, of course, but bathing in the sea and hearing the sound of the waves is the best therapy I can imagine.

Autumn: a short break in a rural area in my country (excellent birdwatching!).

Spring, when we can afford it: the Old World (where it will be the beginning of autumn). Much as we love city life and architecture, we also like to throw in a few days of "green". For example, in 2011 we went to Paris and then drove around Extremadura, Spain, and were delighted by the medieval buildings, the Monfragüe national park and, of course, excellent company in Ávila.

Please let us have your comments too, Pritam.

Have a great week, everyone!

Several places Jan 23

My favorite place is the Grand Canyon anytime of the year except during the "tourists" months (July/August). It's exeptional in sunshine, rain and snow. I also like to go to the North American plains/reservations, South Africa and exotic island.

On second thought, just about every place is/can be interesting and beautiful in its own way.

... how long a holiday? Must be the opposite of my usual life.
On the move, away from “mass holidays” as much as possible. Deserts are great (some better than others), other civilisations, wildlife, cities (preferably human sized), family/friends, mountains, seaside.
I combined a language course with a city and a “host family” experience some time ago.
Even tried a cruise last summer... to Nordkapp and Spitsbergen. I dreaded promiscuity and the crowd, but those ships are huge and I had no trouble avoiding the noisy sections and activities without being confined to my cabin or just a small ‘territory’.

Good company and concerts or museums, anywhere Jan 23

I live in a small holiday town on a peninsula surrounded by good beaches in summer, though they are often windy and cold... Great views for walking, but I am not a beach person. Unless there is a beautiful island like Lindisfarne off Northumberland, one of our favourite family outings as I grew up.
Or lots of sun and children at the age when you can find fossils or dig canals or tunnels and mazes for a ball in the sand.

Museums of shipping, boatbuilding and fishing attract me as somewhere to escape from the wind and the dazzling sunlight on the water... I have a love-hate relationship with both sides of the North Sea!

I am not fond of big cities either, except for day-visits. They fascinate me, and I love the history and the parks, but I love getting away again to somewhere quieter afterwards!

When planning a holiday, I look for historic small towns with good architecture, museums and gardens, walks and exhibitions of traditional crafts and culture, wherever they are. Then I want to be with good friends or family.

I enjoy concerts and music, or theatre if I can understand the language.

I would love to see more of Europe - and have enjoyed Poland, Germany and Spain. Hungary, the Czech Republic and France are high on my 'wish list'! I usually 'end up' visiting family in the UK or Sweden, but have certainly not exhausted all the possibilities there or in Denmark either.

Call me lazy, but I am afraid I have reached an age where deserts are fine on TV, but too exhausting in real life. The same goes for anwhere that involves a lot of waiting about at airports... and anywhere seriously hot, cold or slippery, i.e. snowy!

Source Language Countries Jan 23

I prefer to go and travel around my source language countries: Spain, Portugual, France, and Italy.

I especially like Spain and Italy because I have translator friends/colleagues in those countries whom I visit.

Also love traveling around England, too, without a doubt.

I replied "other" because... Jan 23

... I love Pays Basque because it combines the 3 possibilities within a less than 50 kms-radius: the sea, the mountains and the countryside.

And when I say "sea" I don't mean "beach"

like Syria (not at the moment, unfortunately), Iran (more or less ditto), Uzbekistan, central China. Beaches are abhorrent. Mountains good for a weekend break, cities (=Vienna) a day out.

and yet the most beautiful beach I have ever been in, the most beautiful sea I ever swam in, was in Iran...

I didn't actually vote but my answer is other: I like to travel and take in a bit of everything a country has to offer in terms of culture, architecture, food and drink, scenery, ways to keep more or less in shape and be able to indulge in the food and drink without having to buy new trousers, opportunities to mix with the locals and learn about what makes the people there tick, learn a bit of their language, learn to understand them better

I love the countryside and the mountains but.... Jan 23

I love the countryside and adore Huesca and the Pyrenees but I'd love to visit wildlife areas of Africa, or go to Tibet, India, Argentin, Chile, etc but I am not so mad about the beach as I am the countryside and mountain areas.

I have lived so long in the south of Spain that I can live without intense heat too. I enjoy walking in the snow, under the moon and stars or along a snowy track in the sunshine. I think all weather has good and bad sides. So I am willing to try anything really, even an interesting city with museums, art galleries, etc. I want to enjoy a holiday, be able to do things or relax and learn about life, cultures, art, etc. so I think I am open to anything really, except for just lying on a beach getting brown and bared.
