I do use several of them, mainly the Brandstetter Technical & Engineering German English dictionaries. Additionally I frequently use my Native American language dictionaries.

most of them bought when there weren't any electronic resources yet, but I continue to use especially one of them quite regularly which is still very reliable, and continue to buy others occasionally. When I come across a good paper dictionary I can't resist and I am very astonished to see that the poll shows that around 4% of the participants don't have any. Does that mean that they know everything or rely completely on the internet?

I use no paper dictionaries for Spanish anymore since the online resources are more exhaustive and up-to-date. However, for a language whose vocabulary seems to still be "under construction", namely Catalan, having a good paper dictionary is still a must. I'm looking forward to the day when there are better online resources for Catalan and I can dispense with paper altogether! |

Mary,
I hope you know these resources:

And if still you can't find it, it may be here:

I am also suprised that people use paper dictionaries so little. I also tend to change to electronic versions when they are available. Basically, the search capabilities are much better.

I collected a lot of dictionaries more than 20 years ago when I decided to be a translator.
Boy, it cost me fortune!
Now about 10 year ago when Internet dictionaries became avilable, I swapped my paper dics as they became too burdensome when I move (for same reason I am thinking of buying Kindle instead of decorating my office with bunch of bunch of books).
These survivors are, from time to time, prove themselves deserve to be with me up to this day

I'm only conting the dictionaries found at the shelves next to me. But there are some more all around my house. I have organized them by subject matter, and alphabetically: For instance, I have about 7 dictionaries and glossaries for the oil & gas industry, four monolingual for Spanish doubts, the great María Moliner I use frequently, I have plenty of technical dictionaries, legal, medicine, dictionaries for Architects, another one of "sexual information", an very old Latin dictionnary. I do love all of them. And I use as reliable reference.

I use an automobile dictionary regularly, since I am working on this subject.
During long vacation in my country, I went to some book store in my city and I spent long time with dictionary shelfs.

Paper-based dictionaries do not require Internet access or electricity to work. Reliable, specialist online resources are few and far between in my language pair so I have collected book dictionaries over the years. Also I translate in a great many specialist subjects, I even have dictionaries on beekeeping, beer:), dentistry, statistics, railways and two on aviation, just to mention a few. One is essential: a list of Hungarian place names outside hungary with their foreign equivalents.

Paper dictionaries are reliable and so "cosy"! I like using them. In fact I have even more of them but don't use some of them any more.
