I think all modern antivirus programs do not need user interference to stay updated

My new computer technician calls the former paranoid about security and will see to it (at the end of this week) that the system is safe using a different technique.

I sincerely hope you can still get your former technician back.
That said, I do _not_ use web-mail but Outlook set to plain-text in and out (I refuse to accept/use HTML or rich text), MS Security Essentials, and Redirect Remover in the Firefox web-browser.
I'm paranoid enough to prefer safety to pretty pictures & text.

My AV software also updates automatically, somtimes several times a day. It's very quick and doesn't affect my work. A window pops up and tells me that an update has been performed and how many files were added/updated.

Why would anyone have the slightest interest in how often another person's software updates?
Mine updates itself every day. |

Mine updates itself as and when, pretty much permanantly.
I too wonder why this might be of interest to anyone...

Protecting computers is very important to freelancers and just like it is important to know how others solve other important problems it is also useful to know about computer security.

Yes, I agree with Stanislaw. I like these polls because you can learn about how other people do things - especially important I feel for people like us freelancers, who often (mostly?) work alone!!!!
This has reminded me to deal with downloading the free version of AVG anti-virus software, which is what the 'computer guy' at my husband's company uses on his computers, and recommends.

I have been using a Mac since 2005 (iBook and new Mac mini desktop) and have never had a virus.
To be fair, I only once had a virus issue with my Windows desktop, despite outdated anti-virus software and I use the Internet non-stop all day, so maybe I am just lucky.
