What is the point of this poll?
Sep 16, 2006
I can't see the point of this poll. If the final result is that Prozzers have on average 1.93 children (or young goats), how does that advance the sum of human knowledge? Is the asker proposing to correlate the results with translators' income? And if we find that translators with fewer kids earn more, should I strangle some of mine?

All girls:
1. Dorota (21) http://www.proz.com/pro/62155 who spent the whole summer with me, taking piles of jobs like certificates & diplomas off my head and letting me concentrate on 'real translation' - I miss you already, dear
2. Margaret (19), who says she's able to master any grammar but no active vocabulary (irrespective of language - tried 4), but still was able to act as a SP/EN interpreter when needed
3. Alexandra (16.5), a fan of Harry Potter who couldn't wait for Polish translation of vol. 5 or 6 (don't remember) so organised a teenage translator team and they managed a few months before the official version.
I still remember interpreting at court two days before Margaret was born (if I'm not there 10 min in advance, please call the hospital first ) and translating a long contract a week after But all the three were sweet and on seeing me working turned to daddy right away ... on tiptoes. There was a bit of problem when daddy was not around

What are ProZ.com "Quick Polls"?
ProZ.com quick polls are quick, convenient (and unscientific!) one-question surveys designed to encourage the exchange of information among translators. Quick-polls link to forum topics, encouraging discussion amongst members of the community.
Looks like a lot of site members and users find this an interesting topic of discussion. The polls tells us somethign about us, provides a tool for networking and it may be fun.
Isn't that enough justification for a little daily poll?
Regards,
Enrique

I have a 5-year-old son, and his name is Kai.
He is so sweet but very energetic (Phew!).
So I often find it hard to work when Kai is home.
He would come to me every 10-15 minutes asking for snack, drink, or just a hug... So I end up working more at night after he goes to bed and am chronically short on sleep.
But things won't be the same once he starts spending more time at school. I know he won't be five forever, and I should enjoy these precious years that I can spend time with him.
As for having another child... ?
Hmmmmm, not sure, at this point.
Kana

No, asking how many children people have is not a "tool for networking" (even if the question were asked grammatically). How about a poll asking what colour people's bathrooms are? Is that networking?

I don't see the big deal here, and honestly, I have never understood debating the point of a poll, either. I, for one, find this poll interesting, because I am always interested in knowing about other freelancers' lives and how much I share in common with them. And yes, in a sense, this is one step towards networking. Though, I don't see the point at picking up just one word -networking, that is- from Enrique's message and questioning that one, either. And I believe the knowledge of whether most freelancers have children, whether they mostly fall in an age group to have children, whether they mostly choose to have children, how they work and pursue their careers with children, etc., would tell me much more about my colleagues than knowing about the color of their bathrooms ever would.
However, this was not the main thing I wanted to tell you. It was this, in fact: I find your 'joke' about strangling children in bad taste. Sorry.

I fully agree. This is a fun poll--and one of the goals of ProZ.com is to "have more fun," isn't it? I like knowing more about my colleagues. Anyone who isn't interested can simply skip the discussion on this one--as I do when it's about CAT tools.
It's nice to have something happy to read. The other threads I'm following today are enough to give anyone a headache (right, Enrique?).

Anyone who doesn't like this or any other poll, or has anything against it or doesn't find it interesting/serious enough, can always keep from answering/posting, can't they?

He's 8 (almost 9) and his name is Filip. I've 2 stepsons too, and the one that's living with us is the same age as Filip (only 2 months older).
So all in all I've 4 men to look after.
I really want a little girl. Recipes and advice on how they are made are more then welcome

I was just reading all these lovely messages with translators talking about their children and families, and was thinking, "Gee, this is so nice, I feel like I'm really getting to know some of my colleagues on a personal level, even though we live worlds apart..." and then I came across your message...you're kidding, right? Please tell me you are.
Oh, I have two grown daughters, Hilary and Madeleine. Hilary is single and lives in California and Madeleine is married to a nice Brazilian man and lives in New York. I live in Rio de Janeiro.

They are always around, touching keyboard, pushing me, asking questions, wanting to play, with their glass of hot milk too close... and then, they call the dog. Gee!
Any tip how to throw them away will be highly appreciated.
I'll shurely won't follow them!
Juan Jacob, my beloved compadre, you should kick out the "a" and "c" from your last name: What about JUAN JOB?
How do you do your job in such conditions? Didn't you know there are anticonceptive methods? Anyway, you need 4 more kids to reach my late granma personal record!
Just kidding, happy birthday, my friend... indeed happy half-century!!
Right now I have no kids, I want to have 2 or 3, no less, no more. But I don't see my future with kids at home in my work hours.
