| Parsnips + furocoumarins | Dec 11, 2006 |
I recently translated a scientific article dealing with the toxicity of furocoumarins and their occurrence in foodstuffs. As a result, I have struck parsnips off my shopping list - unless they have been freshly harvested. They used to be one of my favourite vegetables

I normally translate things whose subject I know, or things that I like and feel comfortable/agree with, so no big surprises there.
But sometimes I translate things that have other points of view and make me think about them, or things that are so interesting that I want to keep reading after my translation so I end reading further on Internet.
Actually, I believe I always learn something when translating.

Perhaps "learning" is too trivial for changing or just a "small change," but this aspect of the appeal of translating struck a chord with me several months ago in a related poll or thread. Even if the material doesn't change daily, there's always a new concept or point of view.

Do we stop evolving?

The techie stuff sometimes teaches me about what's new. The commercial stuff does the same and sometimes makes me laugh when I see what some people are planning in their sweet little way (along the lines of: "...and you think that is really going to work, Buster? Well - maybe you are right - I'll tell your story for you" ).
The lyrical stuff turns me on. You know what I mean - words that almost make you moist-eyed?
A constant change, as Terry suggests. Food for the grey matter, and that is why I love it.
I'm glad I don't end up with stuff that is really sad.
Ask to see the files first, perchance?

I learn a lot from the medical and health related contents that I translate. And, if there is a permanent change in habits after learning from translations, it can be called a change. For example, I used to suffer from lower back pain frequently and it lasted for days. But after I made it a point to use a support for my lower back(where already not provided in the design of the chair), the pain disappeared completely!! And, I learned it from a piece of my translations. I also try my best to inc... See more I learn a lot from the medical and health related contents that I translate. And, if there is a permanent change in habits after learning from translations, it can be called a change. For example, I used to suffer from lower back pain frequently and it lasted for days. But after I made it a point to use a support for my lower back(where already not provided in the design of the chair), the pain disappeared completely!! And, I learned it from a piece of my translations. I also try my best to include fibre foods in my diet now, daily 2-3 servings, as I come across this advice again and again during my translations.
There is no doubt translators are the first ones to access some of the best documents prepared by best professionals. Little wonder, if there is learning and change involved.

The biggest truth in my case is that, the more I translate, the more I see that I know nothing and that I will hardly be able to gather a tiny fraction of the specialised knowledge available in today's world. This has made me very careful indeed about terminology and forces me to research and be inquisitive every day!

LOL!  Every now and then I translate some fancy advertising texts about cars by a leading Japanese manufacturer.
I keep asking my customer to send me the vehicles for a test drive before we engage the translation. They keep refusing, which is very discouraging! They always say that I will manage without the test drive... Isn't that mean??

I believe that I change a little almost every time I do a substantive translation (as opposed to certificates, CVs, transcripts, etc., which I try to avoid). Learning about a new subject always changes me. That's why I love translation!
I also learn more about language, and that changes the way I use it.
