I rarely forget, and if even so my email client "reminds" me. It's programmed to scan email messages and if there's a word "attach"/"attachment" in the body and nothing is actually attached it asks me if I'm sure I want to send without an attachment.

I know this is a very good idea. I've grown used to this after forgetting to attach a file twice or three times.

But I've never forgotten when the file is a translation. Something that has to do with the way our mind works...

I don´t suppose I really have forgotten that many times, but it is so mortifying: I feel a total eejit. And worry of course that my customer will think the same. So Anni´s e-mail program feature sounds a good idea (which is it?) and Giles´s recommendation is good.

I have made a habit of closing the file before I attach it, and then opening it from the icon on the e-mail to check that it is the translation, not the original file, and that multiple files are as requested. (All the files if the job included more than one, or cleaned and uncleaned or whatever.)

Closing the file prompts a reminder if I have not saved the last corrections... It is quite frustrating if the client complains about silly typos that I KNOW I have corrected...

Several times when I worked in house, I happily sent mails without files and rushed out of the office to catch my bus... and it does still happen occasionally, but now the routine is a habit, and I usually get a niggling feeling I ought to check the 'Sent mail' before the client mails or calls!

Attaching the file before writing the message is probably a good idea - I must try that!

That's a good idea, Christine, especially to be sure the changes have been saved (though I'm obsessive about saving, every twelve seconds or so...).

Maybe this will help if you have a problem being sure which is the original and which is the translation: I always rename files from the client, with a codeword of my own for the project plus the original title in Spanish. Then my translation is named with the same codeword plus the title in English. That way, I know that the file I attach needs to be a filename in English.

For example:
Original source file: China Epílogo
My translation: China Epilogue

A long time ago, when I first started Sending translations via e-mail, I frequently made this mistake. My clients were very understanding, and I think that I handled the situation well. Many times, I had the premonition that I had not sent the attachment along with the e-mail, and quickly resent the same message with the proper attachment included.

Nowadays, I use a program called RecentX, which allows me to see all of my files, programs, and web pages at a glance. I have now begun the habit of dragging files from RecentX tax and dropping them onto the e-mail message. It works like a charm every time!

The number of things that translator has to keep track of these days is amazing!

I also attach the translation and invoice, and anything else which the client requires (such as a form) before writing the e-mail. After that I write the e-mail. Before sending it I open up each attachment and look at it again. Amazingly, I nearly always spot the one remaining typo in the translation by doing this! (even though I knew there weren't any). I then save the change, close the file, open it again, check that the change is implemented, close it again, send.

However, I find that clients often forget to attach to their e-mail the document that they want me to translate!

be it for translation purposes or personal e-mail. I hasn't happened too often, and I learned fast to make sure the attachment was actually attached...
I wouldn't have thought about opening and verifying again though, as Astrid does, but then my texts are generally too long for that.

Yes! Same with us here. If we forget the attachment half a dozen times a year... our customers forget it two dozen times!

I work in a hectic rush, with a very "tight" deadlines usually and I forget about attachments quite often (too often, I am afraid).

My customers are very patient and thank them for their understanding!

Hope this will never happen again - your idea of attaching the files first is really inspiring
