Interesting... Mar 19, 2007

Other Mar 19, 2007

I replied "other" because I think the concept of "interesting" is so subjective. My partner designs parts for automatic machines, which would bore me to death, but he seems to find it interesting. And he has a lot more interaction with clients face-to-face, which is something I don't have. So from my sujective point of view I'd say I do, but looking at our situation objectively I don't think you can really say. Every job has its pros and cons.

I could have written Fiona's answer for myself, almost word for word (except my partner writes software that controls automotive parts). We both find our jobs interesting, and he thrives on the office politics too (though sometimes it grinds him down).

I couldn't do his job to save his life, and he couldn't do mine, though he does often offer to help me with the 'hard words'!

Equally interesting but quite different Mar 19, 2007

I agree with others that it's hard to compare. My partner is a stone carver who works primarily on heritage sites and historical monuments. As a history buff, I occasionally envy his "backstage access", but on days like today (it's snowing and hailing here) I much prefer to be warm inside and working on a historical translation!

As for envying translation, my partner started out in computer science and after a few years of sitting at a desk all day thought he would go insane. Needless to say, warm feet aside, he’d much rather be outside carving stones and conversing with architects.

I agree with Fiona and Angela. My partner and I have 2 different jobs, and they both seem to be very interesting

Have a nice and interesting day

Interesting to whom? Mar 19, 2007

My wife, for example, loves her job (the hectic organisiation of large-scale worldwide conferences etc.).

Subjectively, I still contend that translation is more interesting. It is seldom that a day comes when we are not confronted with new facts, arcane though they may sometimes be.

Did you know, for example, that if you lined up all the freight containers in the world, they would stretch round the Equator 2.7 times? Now there's one to hold people spellbound at dinner parties.

I once said in a previous posting that you have to be a "nosey bastard". Perhaps "possess an enquiring mind" is a more pleasant way of putting it.

That's what I think keeps the grey cells ticking over, even when you're tired and could well have just kicked it and gone home for the day in another occupation.

Chris

It said "please share"... Mar 19, 2007

... so I will! I agree with Aisha, interesting is a very relative concept. My significant other is a paramedic, which I think is incredibly interesting, but it's not for everyone and I certainly wouldn't want to swap!

"interesting" in what sense? Mar 19, 2007

I would not dare to say that my job is more interesting than my wife's. She has a very challenging job and I have the utmost respect for her efforts. I replied N/A as I don't think anybody can say whether his/her job is more interesting then others'. It is a very relative matter indeed...

"Interesting" is relative... Mar 19, 2007

... but I voted "other", as my husband and I are a team and doing the same job together.

Um, interesting..? Mar 19, 2007

I work as an in-house translator and my wife works as a secretary in the same company. My job is to translate SOPS, reports, etc. It's not exactly what you would call, "Can't wait to turn to the next page" reading.
On the other hand, her job involves all sorts of tasks that I'd go completely crazy doing after a short period of time. I guess for me, my job is more "interesting", but she might think differently!!

I do ... Mar 19, 2007

... simply because I live in a household of one and have no pets.

But that doesn't imply that my job is 'interesting'. My translation work is intended to pay the bills, but I find it utterly boring because it's too easy.

I compensate by engaging in other professional activities that I find far more interesting, even if less rewarding from a financial viewpoint.

I think we both have interesting jobs. My boyfriend is a radio producer and a voice-over artist. Sometimes he helps explaining some technical terms and I help him producing the contents for the radio station. We are a team with diferent - and interesting - jobs that complement each other.

pets? Mar 19, 2007

I voted "other", for exactly the same reason as those who already posted their comments, but I would really like to know about those who voted "their pets"

N/A Mar 19, 2007

for the same reason as other people voted "other" I love my work and what my partner does (coordination of the integration of national databases so they can "talk" to each other) would bore me silly (if I could understand it in the first place, that is) - but he loves his job and wouldn't want mine, so it's impossible to answer the queston.

As for people who answered "their pets", I can see why, judging from mine - lounge around on the bed until about 10 o'clock, then up to pester the resident human for food, up on to the desk behind the keyboard for a quiet snooze and intermittent cuddles until tea time... there may not be much career progression but it's an idyllic life, all right.
