I don't actually get that many TMs (I was thinking about TMs too, the only glossary I use was partly compiled by me) but I can't remember one actually being fully usable.

... when it is poor, it is incredibly poor. Sometimes simply outrageous.

But my view is that the client shall be happy with the translation, not me. And when they have been using a wrong expression for years, how on earth can we change that?

Project glossaries are living breathing organisms created by specialists on both sides, in-house translators, editors and interpreters bringing terminology, including project-specific and professional jargon, fresh from the oven, and quite often some smarta**s who never leave their home offices cause lots of irritation and real trouble.

I'll add - who said they are wrong? Wrong in relation to what? Academic dictionaries? Internal language accepted in the other company? Maybe...

As usual, I'm talking outside of clinical cases... For the latter, the job should be returned with deepest apologies for losing a chance to participate in such wonderful project for reasons beyond reasonable control of the service provider. Have a cup of good coffee or a beer instead:-).

..I use to create my own glossaries and share them with colleagues rather than...these....er...agencies.

In a few instances, I received glossaries from my agencies along with cover letters saying more or less "We are well aware of its poor quality and made the customer aware of that as well, but they decided to sacrifice quality to consistency with the materials developed over the last years. Since this is our major customer, the discussion ended there. Therefore, close your eyes and think of ... your invoice."
