Early in the morning Jan 22, 2008

My best productivity is early in the morning (starting at 5-6 am) until noon.
I find this time very nice, not only because I work faster, but also more relaxed.

Even though it is not slow, I sometimes feel that afternoon's work takes me double effort than morning's.

Take care,

Andrés

In the morning, but... Jan 22, 2008

that often does not seem compatible with family life, so I tend to stay up late, when everything is quiet.

But then my partner seems to take pleasure in not protecting me from our six year-old bouncing up and down on my stomach first thing in the morning, so ideally I would get more done during the day!

Best productivity? At night, always, since 15 years, when everything is calm, quiet, no noises, just peace and clear minds.

Late at night Jan 22, 2008

Late at night, strangely. Mornings I'm useless.

Peak times versus quiet times Jan 22, 2008

My peak times are between 10 in the morning till noon and again between 3 pm and 6 pm. During those times I can break records.

Unfortunately those are exactly the times that phone solicitors consider the ideal time to call me, offering credit cards, long distance and what not. So I got into working at night, while I am undisturbed by phone calls and doorbells. I also don't feel compelled to drop everything to reply to each and every email immediately. After all, it's in the middle of the night..)

I follow my Muses and biorhythms Jan 22, 2008

I like working in the morning, but my Muses seem to be most awake at night. I'll be sound asleep and suddenly wake up and know that I'll be able to get a lot done. It's when I feel creative and focused on my work.

My wife got used to me getting up at all hours of the night a long time ago. I think one of the greatest advantages of being a freelancer is that, if you don't have small children or someone else who depends on your schedule, you can follow your own biorhythms.

(My kids are past the age of coming and waking me up. I'm the one dragging them out of bed now )

Late morning/early afternoon Jan 22, 2008

I chose 'other' which for me means late morning between 10.30 and 14.30. I could never start as early as 6 or 7 o'clock since I find it impossible to think clearly when it is that early and by late afternoon I start to lose my concentration!

Early morning Jan 22, 2008

From 6:00 a.m. onwards used to be my best time for work, because inspiration always seemed to come to me as the deadline (often 8:00 or 9:00) was fast approaching and sentences that seemed impossible the day before would suddenly become a piece of cake.

But now that I have a child, getting up early to work is no longer an option, because I am not left alone, my alarm clock is likely to wake everyone else up, and I obviously cannot think properly when I'm surrounded by the breakfast/getting ready hustle and bustle. I now don't even start work for the day until 9:30, after I've done the school run. This forces me to work until late at night, often 1:00 a.m., sometimes even 2:00, long after everyone has gone to bed. I try to renegotiate deadlines so that I can hand work in later to do the final read through after the school run, or I try to finish them early, so that I am not actually trying to "polish" something off late at night, but it's not always easy...

Where was midday among the answers? Jan 22, 2008

I schedule around my family, so early morning is out (getting everyone out the door, walking dog) as is afternoon (helping with homework, providing family taxi service) and evening (dinner). I work when I have the time, which does often include afternoons and the occassional evening, but always includes midday, say 10-3pm and after 8pm.
I *can* work productively any time except early morning. I'd much rather stay up late than drag myself out of bed early. Luckily, it appears to be genetic, as the whole family shares that trait, so no one is up at 6am, except the cats.

Dear Lisa, may I invite you into the team "Night Owls"?

Early morning I am trying to look as a human being, but without my morning coffee and before the second cigarette I am useless too. Practically I am not able to open my eyes or even talk

Sun clock Jan 22, 2008

I can work non-stop -and I find it enjoyable, too- when there is plenty of natural light. Of course, I am blessed with living in the Mediterranean, where the sun shines for a big part of the day, even in winter. However, at winter it gets somewhat annoying when it darkens before five and something inside me starts telling me "drop everything, the day is off and you've done nothing but work all the time"...

I guess my body clock is a sun clock!

If I have an 8 or 9am deadline (which I try to avoid, but it does happen!), I'll get up at 4 or 5 and spend a couple of hours "polishing" the final translation before I submit it. I can focus much better then than late at night - and there are no phones ringing or urgent emails to answer at 5 am!

Early morning - definitely. Jan 22, 2008

Like John, to a large extent my bioligical clock dictates my working hours. I only use an alarm clock in the winter when the sun gets up late, and only then it's just in case I don't hear the rooster next door. Whether I have work or not, mid week or on the weekend, I wake up around 5am. If I have a lot to get through I'll often wake up by myself around 3.30 or 4. And it's never a case of dragging myself out of bed. I absolutely treasure those couple of hours before I have to get the kids up and off to school between 6.30 and 7.30.

I always work best when there's no-one else around to distract me (I distract easily) but as the day goes on my productivity wanes. With the family's comings and goings in the afternoon, work is sporadic. I get some time after the kids go to bed, but in all honesty, I'm not much use to anyone after 11pm.

I estimate that up to 50% of my daily (and most creative) ouput comes in those early morning hours. The rest is scattered throughout the day in chunks of varying sizes.
