Hi Cheekita, My favorite is (was) the Reverso dictionary: http://dictionary.reverso.net. I say "was," because after you use it for awhile, they cut you off and don't let you use it any more. They direct you to a page where you can download the software or buy a CD, but the page doesn't have the Portuguese/English/Portuguese dictionary. I e-mailed them to complain, but never heard back. These are pretty good for European Portuguese (no English): http://www.hostdime.com.br/dicionario/ http://pt.thefreedictionary.com/passar I just bought the paper version of this one (Port>Eng) and so far it seems good: http://tinyurl.com/9kd8q4 This one is only Portuguese, but has some interesting explanations of words and phrases. http://www.dicionarioinformal.com.br/ Good luck! I'm hoping someone else will post here, because I really miss the Reverso dictionary and am hoping to find something of equal quality. Most of the other Port>Eng dictionaries I've found on line are pretty crappy. ▲ Collapse | | | Marian Vieyra United Kingdom Local time: 02:11 Member (2007) French to English + ... Hello there, In addition to the suggestions made by other prozians, you could also try Priberam: http://www.priberam.pt/dlpo/dlpo.aspx No English again, but good variety of explanations. Good luck, Marian | | | Babylon online | Jan 2, 2009 |
I use the Collins online at reverso.net (but I must not use it enough, because they've not cut me off yet!) See more I use the Collins online at reverso.net (but I must not use it enough, because they've not cut me off yet!) I also use the Babylon online dictionary http://www.babylon.com/define/116/English-to-Portuguese-Dictionary.html. It takes the word you type in and tries to find matches in both directions, and also out into more than just English, will provide the Spanish-English definition as well if the forms are identical. This has occasionally been useful when no definition exists for PT>EN, but a SP>EN definition points me in at least the right direction, or a PT>FR definition provides a clue. They may well have a usage limit as well, but I've not hit it yet! Wordreference.com is one of my standard resources for Spanish--their PT>EN offering is still in beta, but can also be useful (http://www.wordreference.com/pten). One nice feature is that it provides an alphabetical list of words on either side of the searched term, which can be helpful in finding related terms. Also offers extensive listings of idiomatic expressions that use the base term, and links to discussions in their terminology forums. ▲ Collapse | |

Just to add that Hostdime and Dicionárioinformal indicated by Amy are both for Brasilian Portuguese! http://www.infopedia.pt has plenty of language combinations but only the portuguese one is free. But it is prettty good. | | | Susana Alves Portugal Local time: 01:11 Portuguese to English + ... Neither free nor online, but close | Jan 2, 2009 |
I recently purchased an old (2006) Diciopedia for 4 Euros, and I love it. I also depend heavily on the monolingual Houaiss and Concise Oxford English Dictionary (not the complete OED, which I love as well but my version doesn't run vista). The Electronic Houaiss is great because it includes both European and Brazilian. Just wanted to give a couple of alternatives. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » free online portuguese dictionary Trados Business Manager Lite | Create customer quotes and invoices from within Trados Studio
