Hi fellow translators living in Portugal! I know you are the right people to ask this. After months and months of sitting by the computer, translating, and meeting impossible deadlines, I'm more than ready for vacation. This year, our family council decided to visit Portugal. We would like to avoid those over-crowded tourist resorts, but would like to stay (2 weeks) at a small place (with sandy beaches - my kids say this is the must) in the Lisbon area. Is there a place you would recommend?
Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
Regards
Katica

Setubal Jul 3, 2005

Dear Katica,
I think the area around Setubal is very nice. It’s not far from Lisbon (it’s just south of the river) and it has lovely sandy beaches, mountains, castles and monuments to visit. It's got easy access to the airport and you can also visit Lisbon and the surrounding areas (I advise you to go to Sintra, it’s really nice).
I think Sesimbra, Arrabida or Troia would be nice places to stay.
Let’s see what other colleagues suggest.
Cristina

Do not go in August Jul 3, 2005

My family also has decided to head to Portugal this summer. But instead of one destination we have chosen many - we are going with out trailertent via Spain (where we do not want to stay too long as we have not had a proper bica (small strong Portugese cofee) already for two years!). When we lived in Portugal for a few years we never had a chance to visit all those places in the North and that is were we will start now. Also visit some friends in Poto, then probably head Peniche way (lovely fishing town some 100 kilometres Noth from Lisbon), visit friends there and then head to Lisbon area where our favourite beach is - Potinhas by Setubal.
The only advice I can give you - do not go there in August. On first of August tourist fload Portugal, on September 1 you can move around again as everybody have left.

Cheers,
Burrell

Holiday in Portugal Jul 3, 2005

Hi!

Lisbon (Lisboa in Portuguese) is an enchanting travel destination. The city is built on seven hills that rise from the north bank of the Tagus (Tejo) River. Its coastal suburbs overlook the sparkling sea. Lisbon is a city of contrasts. Though delightfully informal, it is the political, economic and cultural center of Portugal and has a population in city and suburbs of over two million.

Lisbon boasts one of the finest subway, bus and train systems anywhere, yet the local favorite is the Electrico. This is a system of antique trolley cars built in the style of days gone by. The cars are beautifully lined with wood panels, insulating them from the intense summer heat. One of the most popular trolley lines is number 28 which goes across the entire city, a trip that necessitates rolling around steep turns and up and down hills in roller coaster fashion. Though Electrico operates consistently at a loss, city residents wouldn't hear of discontinuing it!

I enclose further information! enjoy your Holiday and Lisbon and surroundings is a good destination in August. There is a saying in Portugal "those who haven't seen Lisbon don't know what beauty is!"
