First at all, excuse me for posting in English in this forum, but my Portuguese spelling is still terrible.

My boss has asked me to learn Portuguese, not for translation purposes, but to be able to talk to our Portuguese clients. I am a native speaker of Galician, a language which, as perhaps some of you know, has strong grammatical and lexical similarities with Portuguese, although its phonetics and spelling are quite different. When reading a text in Portuguese, I can understand maybe 90% of it; listening and speaking is of course more difficult for me, althought I've already started trying it with my Portuguese and Brasilian colleagues and I hope to get used to the Portuguese/Brasilian accents with their help. But I would like, of course, a more formal training (grammatical differences, improving my spelling and vocabulary...) to do on my own. I've considered to join a course of Portuguese for beginners at the VHS (I'm living in Germany, this VHS is a kind of popular university), but I don't know if it will be worth it, as most of the other students will be German and of course they would have to go through a lot of grammar, morphology and so on I am already familiar with.
Do you know a good book I can work with on my on? On-line Portuguese lessons? Have you experience in teaching Portuguese to Galician/Spanish speakers?

I don't have particular advice on converting from Spanish to Portuguese, but I know what has helped me as I have studied four languages--each one in a different style. (Portuguese remains my favorite.) The following are the basic skill sets and why I think they're important.
Listening to Portuguese: it took me a good six months of full immersion before I started to understand flowing conversation well, so don't expect overnight success though you will likely do better than I did.
Conversing in Portuguese: it may be difficult and discouraging at times, but its the best way to improve speaking.
Speaking in Portuguese: record your voice on cassette and listen to how you sound. If you get to the point where you can effectively teach a basic skill in the language, you're doing pretty well.
Reading in Portuguese: I think it's the easiest of the skill set since the words don't move.
Writing in Portuguese: taking your time to compose sentences and formulate ideas will help polish your grammar.

A Universidade Aberta tem vários cursos de português online: www.univ-ab.pt/disciplinas/dlcp/pagina_dlcp/usos_quotidiano/destinat_requisitos.html
Os cursos de português da Volkshochschule são, normalmente, ministrados por professores brasileiros, logo iria aprender a variante brasileira, mas não lhe deveria ser muito difícil fazer a transição para português europeu.
A nível da auto-aprendizagem, gosto particularmente dos manuais “Português sem Fronteiras” (três níveis), da “Gramática Activa 1”, da “Gramática Activa 2" e do "Vamos lá Começar" da www.lidel.pt, pois os temas e a gramática são apresentados de maneira simples e de fácil compreensão e têm muitos exercícios. Pode adquiri-los com ou sem as respostas (nalguns casos vêm no livro do professor).
E se conhece falantes de português, aproveite a oportunidade, sempre que estiver com eles, para falar português e peça-lhes para a corrigirem se se enganar. De certeza que eles ficarão encantados.
Se tiver televisão por satélite, tente ver todos os dias durante alguns minutos (ou mais) os canais portugueses. A RTP Internacional, por exemplo.
Leia também em português! É muito importante para aquisição de vocabulário! Se tiver um livro de que goste particularmente e que conheça bem, tente encontrar a versão em Língua Portuguesa. Vai ver que é fácil.

Primeiro, quero pedir desculpas por nao acentuar algumas palavras, pois nao estou no meu computador habitual.
Como o colega Luís, além da actividade de traduçao também dou aulas de portugues para estrangeiros, nomeadamente espanhóis e galegos.
Os métodos comentados pelo Luís sao muito usados nos meios académicos, mas também gostaria de acrescentar o Avenida Brasil, método brasileiro muito prático e que no nível 2, só há 2 n... See more à comunidade portuguesa!

É possível comprá-lo online no eBay. Em cada nível há livro de texto + livro de exercício com as soluçoes no final do livro. Também há fitas cassetes para ouvir as liçoes.
Como já disse, trata-se de um método fácil e de rápida assimilaçao.

Em relaçao aos cursos, uma boa opçao é o Centro de Estudos Brasileiros. Pertence ao governo brasileiro e há em quase todas as grandes cidades da Europa. Há em Berlim e funciona há mais de 20 anos ministrando cursos de portugues para estrangeiros. Talvez possam dar alguma indicaçao ao respeito.
