The Shizuoka International Translation Competition is a contest held every two years by the Shizuoka Prefecture to introduce outstanding works of Japanese literature to foreigners and promote international understanding. Since the contest is aimed at aspiring translators of Japanese, contest entrants may be commercial translators or those who have never had a literary translation published. Joint translations are not accepted.
Every year it is held, translations are accepted in English and one other language. This year's "other language" is Russian. (Past "other languages" have been French, Chinese, German and Korean). So, two Grand Prizes are awarded, consisting of 1,000,000 yen and a year's scholarship at a university within the Prefecture. Four second prizes (two for each language, in the amount of 300,000 yen) are given for Distinguished Translation, and four more for Distinctive Merit (100,000 yen).
Recipients of the Grand Prizes and the Distinguished Translation Awards will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony.
The subject matter of the contest will deal with one short story and one piece of literary criticism. Contestants will be given their materials upon inquiry from:
