Question about the proper usage of quotation marks

Here's the phrase in question:

All DSM monitors are plug and play type

Perhaps better:

All DSM monitors are "plug and play"

Or without quotation marks above?

I think you can use hyphens here and you do not need quotes: of the plug-and-play type.

single quotation marks are used when an expression is considered by the author to be novel, odd, etc.


double ones are literally quotation marks, recalling the words of someone

'plug-and-play' is no longer a novel term, so putting it in quotes would imply that they are not really plug-and-play.

As to whether you need 'type' or 'of the p&p type', it depends on the register (degree of formality) of your text. With a relatively informal register, 'all x are plug-and-play' is fine IMO.
