Today I was awarded KudoZ points for my answer to a question and was advised that the asker didn’t enter anything into the glossary. When I tried to make the glossary entry myself I discovered that someone else (not the asker and not any of the other contributors to the question) had himself entered my answer and thus gained himself 10 BrowniZ.

I don’t want or need the BrowniZ but I consider it unfair that people who have nothing to do with a question can make a glossary entry whose formulation often requires the specialist knowledge of the asker or the answerer.

Comments on this are more than welcome; anyone who wants to know who the “culprit” was can find out by searching for “Bitebene” under German > English in the Kudoz glossary.

Hi Robert Feb 27, 2002

Maybe you don\'t know that you are not allowed to modify the glossary or squash questions if you don\'t have more than 500 points and another pros did it for you.

Anyway if you find errors or omissions in the glossary you can tell it in the forum. Other pros will surely help you.

Good luck

Chiara

Reply to Robert Feb 27, 2002

Yes, it happened to me too, some weeks ago.

I was awarded Kudoz points and the asker did not enter the term into the glossary, but when I tried to do it, it was not possible.

Can this be due to a system failure? Are you sure that someone...

You know, I\'m a young Proz member, so I do not know exactly how this could happen.

Culprit? Feb 27, 2002

Robert,

1. How do you know the identity of the person entering the glossary? There is no link to any member profiles or anything. Maybe the asker of the question entered the term after the e-mail went out.

2. As already stated, anyone with 500 points or more (or paying members, as far as I know) can modify the glossary.

There _is_ a link to the person who entered the term in the glossary, at least there is when I enter \"Bitebene\".

If you open any Proz profile page, you can click on the person\'s Kudoz and enter items into the glossary for that person even if you were not involved in asking/answering the question. As a paying member, I don\'t need the browniZ, but the potential for abuse by non-paying members who need the points in order to bid is obvious. On the other hand, this could help get more items into the glossary, albeit not always the correct ones. However, even if the item is in the glossary, I always read all ... See more

Link to the person who entered the term Feb 27, 2002

The name of the person who made the glossary entry is clearly visible to me and obviously to some other members but perhaps not to members with less than a certain number of KudoZ points (I don\'t know what that number is).

This is not a case of being able to change an existing glossary entry; it\'s a matter of making the entry in the first place by a person who has nothing to do with the original question or answer.

Illegal?? Feb 27, 2002

One of the aims of the KudoZ system is to create the glossary of glossaries.

Without entries, the result will be meagre.

I have found that many participants do not care to enter questions+answers into the glossary.

I once went back on the German>Swedish and English>Swedish list and found out that there were a lot of unentered pairs.

So I entered them.

I do not consider myself as illegal or criminal by doing it - and I did not do it for the BrowniZ (I have enough).

BrowniZ are meant to stimulate the act of entering - a good thing, I\'m sure you concur.

BUT: Like squahing, glossar entries have to be done with utmost conscientiousness.

If so I see no objection to be made when a \'third party\' makes additions to the glossar.

Best regards

Robert, you have less points than I do. So, it can\'t be related to the number of points.

Does anyone have a clue? ▲ Collapse

Doing what you did Mats is fine after a certain time has passed and particularly when you\'re a sort of \"expert\" in the languages and the subject concerned. But in this case the entry was made very soon after the Kudoz points were awarded and by someone who doesn\'t list IT or computing or anything related to that in his profile. I don\'t regard that as conscientious; I consider it a serious risk for the quality of the \"glossary of glossaries\". ▲ Collapse

I agree with Mats, and I understand Robert... Feb 27, 2002

I fully agree with Mats in that it\'s a good thing to contribute to the glossary. But I\'ve also been miffed when someone entered one of my answers before I even knew it had been selected. Also, when I was very new here, I entered an answer someone else had given, and that person told me, in no uncertain terms, that he/she was very upset about losing those BrowniZ. That\'s how I learned that BrowniZ are very important for some people, and here\'s what I do: I enter only my own terms, except when... See more

That\'s how I learned that BrowniZ are very important for some people, and here\'s what I do: I enter only my own terms, except when I find old answers that have not been entered. This usually happens when I\'m working: I look up a term in the glossary, find an unedited KudoZ question, find a good answer that\'s a few months old, and assume that both the asker and the answerer have given up on it, so I enter it.

Now, what\'s the statute of limitations on this? I don\'t know, but maybe we can work it out together...

Thanks Andrea for reassuring me that I\'m not the only person who has been miffed by this greedy, point-hungry practice of some people.

Is it greediness? Feb 27, 2002

Robert, I\'m not sure it\'s greediness. It may be someone who\'s new here and has not learned about the subtleties of KudoZ etiquette .
