Do you think my icon is offensive or distasteful? I have received positive and negative comments about it (somebody said it was \"disgusting\"). If the majority thinks it\'s to be removed, I will remove it!

I feel it just a little bit tiring Mar 30, 2002

to see these blinking things while one is trying to concentrate on the text to be read - but the same applies also to other icons, since these flashes have widespread all over the site...

Anyway personally I am against every type of censure, when it is not self-imposed; it is up to you to decide whether to avoid hurting people who said to be troubled by your icon or to ignore them - Easter is coming, it would probably be better to show an act of peace and good will, don\'t you think so?

Happy Easter to everybody - including the small red devils !

I absolutely love it!!! Mar 30, 2002

Hi Giovanni,

I think your icon is soooo cool and creative!! I love it. It is perfect for a translater/brain-worker. I don\'t see an allusion to the devil, to me, it looks like a very hard working person (the rolling eyes, the smoke coming out of the brain, ...)Besides, it will definitely attract people\'s attention, and who knows, that might result in some good business deals, and if not, if will definitely make people smile.

Keep it please and happy Easter!

Patricia

It's detracting Mar 30, 2002

Dear Giovanni,

You asked for it, so I\'ll answer:

I think it\'s detracting our interest from the important part: Your messages.

I thought we all had left the \'blinky-beep\' age behind us.

Happy Easter!

Careful with that icon, Eugene... Mar 30, 2002

Or was that an axe in the song?

Well, an icon is not an axe, but it sure could fell prospective clients...

Actually, one of the notions underlying the use of an icon is that, besides being a symbol or graphic representation, an icon is a sign which has a characteristic in common with the thing it signifies. It is up to the viewer to grasp that.

Interestingly enough, the term \'icon\' in the sense \'simile\' comes from the Greek eikon \'likeness, image\'.

Surely, any professional will do his/her very best to find an adequate personal icon.

Iconically yrs.

PS

BTW, my Proz icon depicts the ideogram \'Tanuki\' ’K inscribed within a circle. Very iconical, but then ideograms are like that...handy...

Please keep it! Mar 30, 2002

Your devilish icon it\'s very funny indeed, Giovanni! You\'re a great chap! I also love your profile too. So different from the usual boring pictures you see around... Who said translators are boring persons?

You have talent, Giovanni!

No, I don't find it distracting Mar 30, 2002

I don\'t find it distracting at all!

Hey, unless someone starts using pictures or icons of body parts or pornographic material, it\'s alright.

I don\'t find the use of different icons, clipart images, etc. unprofessional, nor do I consider such harmless fun childish.

It\'s about advertising, right? And in advertising, you try to attract people\'s attention (within certain limits; see above), right?

So, get with it!

Personal, creative, fun, professional - lacking style Mar 30, 2002

Giovanni,

Your icon is uncommon, attracting attention and all what I said above. Which means quite a bit.

No, it is not likeable, but funny. It atttracts attention, positively and negatively.

I can\'t say I like it, but I do like the idea behind it, probably the person who has created it.

Creative clients won\'t mind that at all.

It lacks style because the underlying techniques are simply mass ware.

Smoke, not fire, should emerge from your creative brain. Leave the icon as it is or give it another try by merging fun and a natural touch.

Congratulations anyway.

Maya

Icon should reflect what you are marketing or yourself? Mar 30, 2002

I do not find Giovanni\'s icon offensive but rather feel that it is not at the same great level as his profile which is amusing, creative and informative. The icon, to use a technical term, is not well collocated with the profile. It would be if his specialty was translating only comic books.
