Dear Lucia
as far as I know, moderators are volonteers. They do not receive Proz.com laptop bags, T-shirts, free airline tickets for Proz.com conferences, free CAT tool licences or else. Proz.com is not charity organization. Proz.com is business. So moderators should be awarded in some way.

For a person who has achieved success as a translator or interpreter, or in a translation company, and who has derived benefit from ProZ.com, the moderator program provides an opportunity to give something back by sharing what you have learned with others.
Secondly, as it turns out, helping others to benefit from the mission also allows one to experience the benefits of the mission in a deeper way oneself. For example, because each class of moderators consists of a group of about 100 professionals from around the world, the program provides a great opportunity for personal networking. The camaraderie, and resulting friendships, cross linguistic and geographical boundaries. Also, because of the high profile nature of the role, moderators gain exposure that in some cases may lead to new business opportunities. Finally, as is the case with any professional challenge, the moderator role provides opportunities to advance as a professional and have fun at the same time.

What "mission" is this? As bergazy pointed out, ProZ is a for profit business and as such any "mission" it might have is to increase said company's profits.

Hmm - I would have thought that paying members already "give something back" in hard currency and us non-paying ones do so by increasing ProZ's unique visitors/impressions.

Lucia - as you use the term "mission" extensively, could you please clarify what you mean by said term.

I'm curious as to what the moderators get out of it.
I know what ProZ gets out of it: Free labor for a Web site that is very commercial.
Are there any outgoing moderators who would want to describe what they get out of it, or incoming moderators who would want to describe what they think they are going to get out of it?
Why don't you just volunteer your time for Chase Bank or some other commercial organization? I literally find this unreal.

I became a forum moderator in early 2002 and remained a volunteer moderator until the moment I joined the staff in 2006.
Motivation is very personal, and what some find great will be irrelevant to others. I personally enjoyed a lot my experience as moderator.
Being part of a selected team of volunteers working together for the community in maintaining a constructive atmosphere of positive interactions, and welcoming and assisting new arrivals (especially new translators) was both an enjoyable and learning experience.
And I very much enjoyed interacting with other moderators, even in occasional disagreements. Many good memories and bonds remain from those days.
