What's the significance of "Identical IP address" message? Thread poster: Armorel Young
|
When adding an "agree" to a Proz answer suggested by another member a message came up headed "Identical IP address" and warning me that "Your IP address is the same as that of the answerer". What is going on? - I don't know the answerer at all, and I don't see how his IP address can actually be the same as mine. I would like to be reassured that there is no sinister explantion!

It depends on how you access the internet and how your provider allocates internet 'addresses' (IP numbers) to its customers. Some people have a permanent IP address, others get a new one each time they log on - and sometimes a whole bunch of people appear to have the same IP address when a web server (such as ProZ) 'sees' them log in. If the person you wanted to "agree" with is geographically close to you, or if you use a major provider to access the internet, then this could be the explanation.

Dear Armorel, Ian is right. The message about the IP address conflict can be safely ignored, in most cases, for the reasons explained by our colleague. Thank you Gianfranco

Dear Armorel, I believe that you and another proZ member have the same IP address (maybe using the same Inet provider). Your identity is verified, so you'd better contact moderators and ask them to investigate the matter and liberate you from these annoying messages. Thanks everyone | Feb 3, 2005 |
Thanks for the explanations - I shall stop worrying unless it starts happening regularly (just a one-off so far).

Hi, Armorel, It's happened to me (AOL server) literally dozens of times - mostly with three different contributors, but these are ALL IN Germany believe it or not (I didn't to start with!), BUT NOT ONE of them is within 180 km of me. One is in Würzburg, one in Kassel and one in Berlin, while I am in Braunschweig. Even more surprisingly, perhaps, is the fact that I have also had this message from France, Belgium and the Netherlands. So where does this leave the "local" theory?? Best, David
