I've come across one outsourcer that expressly indicates in its confidentiality clause that translators cannot enter comments in BB

Lydia, I hope you reported this. I would think that is a very serious breach of the rules.

I didn't say it was faultless ... but ... Jul 24, 2009

I agree, Tom and Wildcat, that the Blue Board may have its faults and could be subject to manipulation by unscrupulous outsourcers. I didn't say it was faultless. What I said was that, on this particular occasion, it saved me from working for a hitherto unknown agency who, I discovered, had an appalling Blue Board record as a non-payer and who had been banned from posting jobs at Proz.
There may (I repeat, may) be reason to suspect an outsourcer who has nothing but 5s of having perhaps threatened freelancers who won't give them a good record, or some such ploy, but surely when an outsourcer has received nothing but 1s or 2s both recently and in the last couple of years, that record can be relied on and the outsourcer is best avoided?
In fact, since I started this thread I have been contacted personally by another Proz freelancer who told me she had had an approach from the same dodgy outsourcer on the same morning and had likewise been saved by the Blue Board - in this particular case.
Best wishes,
Jenny

BlueBoard is one of the best things about Proz but it's only as good as we, the translators, make it

And wouldn't you say your above statement applies to just about everything here in Proz.com?

Anyway, I think this thread is a good example of the best of Proz.com, where people are willing to spontaneously share their experience with the intention of helping others avoid trouble.

Good idea, Jenny.

Very useful to the industry Jul 31, 2009

I have posted my share of criticism of the BB, but I would like to add my appreciation for it. I think its beginning to contribute to an improvement in translator/agency relations in general, as more agencies are beginning to become aware that their relations with individual translators will become known to the entire community. Of all features Proz offers, its one of the most significant. I would love to see it prominently mentioned on the home page, so that visiting outsourcers were fully aware of it.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but an email I received recently from an agency stated "We are proud of our 4.9 rating on the Blue Board"!

Thanks, Michael - this was a really useful link. Nice to see it is still around, 11 years after publication!
