Good morning

Having just done a search on translators, I was actually wondering what happened to all my Platinum collegues... I then realised that I had chosen the option "Great Britain", which I never actually noticed before. Carrying out a search on "United Kingdom" (as I used to in the past), brings up totally different results. Is this a duplication and could one option be eliminated in order to show accurate results? Likewise, please note that there are two entries for United Kingdom.

Thanks for your assistance.

Kind regards

Wenke

Hi Wenke,

You should also send a support request to ProZ.com staff in order to make sure that this matter will be dealt with and corrected in due course.

To do this, go to http://www.proz.com/support

Best,

Steffen

P.S. @ staff -- I'd suggest to delete "Great Britain" and one of the "United Kingdom" entries.

UK is not the same as Great Britain Feb 8, 2005

Just for the record - and without wishing to get overly political - the UK is not the same as Great Britain. The "UK" means "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", meaning that it includes Northern Ireland, whereas Great Britain does not.

This might explain why you get different results ...

Ian, agree but... Feb 8, 2005

Ian

Thanks for your posting.

I am aware of the difference but without starting a new (and possibly heated) discussion, will it add to problems / confusion if work providers are trying to source a translator (are they aware of the differentiation and / or the option of selecting both "UK" and "GB")?

It seems that the majority of entries are under "UK", so based on the strict definition of the term and the translators' choices, one would assume that we would have a large Northern Ireland base?

Well, I guess it's up to the individual translator but IMHO it adds to confusion.

Kind regards

Wenke

... wouldn't it make sense, from a purely pragmatic point of view, and in terms of user-friendliness, to leave only one "UK" entry?

Best,

Steffen

British Isles Feb 8, 2005

The British Isles are supposed to include GB plus Ireland, North & South - plus Isle of Man & the Channel Islands - according to this website, but are equated to GB on others.

I suggest adding and not deleting.

Same with Spain (I think) Feb 8, 2005

Somewhere on this site, maybe the search for translators, there are two entries for Spain. I have never bothered to check and see that they are different, but it is a bit misleading...even frustrating.

Not "British Isles" Feb 11, 2005

Whatever the answer to this, I don't think it should be to use "British Isles". Ian W is absolutely right about not wanting to get political - which is precisely what a "British Isles" entry would do. As TT points out, the geographical term BI includes all of Ireland - and thus an awful lot of people who would never look for their country under a term beginning with "Brit."

Whether or not we like the term "United Kingdom", it's the term used internationally to describe the state. "Great Britain" isn't.
