Hi Elena,
Myair.com has direct, low cost flights from Venice to Marseille, which is the closest airport to Aix en Provence.
I just checked, if you fly in on the 1st, and fly out on the 6th - the price is less than 70 €, but the problem is that there are no return flights before the 6th ! So you would be spending a lot on the hotel, unless you wanted to take some vacation after the conference;-)
There are no direct flights from Venise to Nice, which is the next closest airport.
You might be better off driving ? I don't know about trains ...
There are regular bus connections from the Marseille airport to Aix, or if you come by train into Aix Center Train station, the hotels are all within walking distance. If you come into the Aix TGV train station, count on at least 30 min. to get into town, depending on the time of day.... by the way Natalia, I meant to tell you that morning traffic between the TGV train station and Aix center is pretty bad ... even taking a taxi, you might have some delays.

Sorry for not getting back to you before, for some reason I couldn't see your forum post. Thanks Lori for your great help and advice!
Elena, you could get a train to Aix but I've just looked it up and it would take you a whole day. There are night trains that go to Nice and from there you could get a train to Aix. However, I couldn't find the prices as you will obviously be leaving from Italy, not France.
I hope to see you in November!

Dear Elena,
Don't know if this helps but I'll be leaving from Nice by car on Thursday morning and coming back on Saturday night. If you'd like to carpool, please let me know.
Sincerely,
John

Dear John,
That's very kind of you. I was looking for a good flight bringing me to Nice on Thursday and to Italy on Saturday. Indeed, there's nothing pretty cheap, but in case I'll tell you as soon as possible.
Thank you again.
