Hello!

I don't know if it happened to you too, but today I wanted to quote on a job I qualify for... but I couldn't for it being restricted.

The problem was the outsourcer was looking for four different kind of translators (different specializations and language combinations) and they restricted the posting to the ones complying with the requirements for the first and fourth group of translators...

So what about the rest of the postings?

In case you are wondering, I did write to a moderator about it... No responses so far.

Thanks for your comments.
Regards,
María Leticia

If you qualify for the job, make sure your profile reflects this Jul 21, 2008

Hello María Leticia,

Please note that a job poster may choose to restrict a given job based on a number of criteria, including for example native language, language pairs, fields of expertise, software experience, credentials, location, and membership. If you feel you qualify for a job, be sure that your profile reflects your qualifications. If you specialize in medical translations but do not have this declared in your profile, not only are you missing out on quoting on jobs where this specialization is required, but you are not being found in the directory when potential clients search for specialists in that area as well.

If you are having trouble quoting for a job you feel you qualify for, the quickest way of seeing if there is a problem, or of getting help with your profile, is to submit a support request. Be sure to include the specific page URL for the job(s) involved in your request.

Best regards,

Jared

I see my colleague jobs moderator has sent this to the outsourcer in question Jul 21, 2008

I have just received a complaint from a translator who speacializes in technical translation and who is unable to quote on this job posting. The ProZ.com Jobs system limits access to the job posting quote function to those ProZ.com profiles which meet all requirements specified by a job poster.

You have required :
Required expertise: Tech/Engineering
Required specific fields: Banking = Finance
Subject field: Other

This means that translators whose ProZ.com profiles do not contain *all three* criteria (Tech/Engineering, Banking = Finance AND Other) will not be able to submit quotes for your job posting. Since translators who specialize in Tech/Engineering are not usually also qualified in Banking = Finance, and since *specialized* translators rarely include "Other" in their profiles, the number of translators who will actually be able to submit quotes on your job will be very limited. Moreover, those who do apply will probably not be those most proficient in the areas you are seeking.

Please edit your job posting to include both Tech/Engineering and Banking = Finance under all three items (Required expertise, Required specific fields, and Subject field). You may also include "Other" under those three categories if you are, in fact, also seeking translators who handle "Other" areas of translation. If you require assistance editing this job posting, please contact a Jobs moderator. We will be glad to assist you.

Many thanks in advance for your cooperation.

And this is about all we can do and my colleague has done it right away after your complaint. Sorry, but we cannot on our own edit outsourcers' job postings and requirements.

I hope for your understanding.

Uldis

Not related to what my profile reflects Jul 21, 2008

Hi Jared,

Please note these restrictions are not related to what my profile reflects.

Anyway, thanks, I've just been contacted by a moderator (not the one I initially wrote an email today) about it. ("El que no llora, no mama", says the famous tango...)

Regards,
María Leticia

I perfectly understand you cannot modify or delete a job posting.

However, please note I was referring to the thrid group of translators:
"Traducteurs ayant de bonnes qualités rédactionnelles pour tout domaine FR > EN, EN > ESP et FR > ESP"

I'm not quite qualified on technical translatons, but I was hoping on quoting for this posting as I believe I have excellent writing skills in Spanish and I specialize in various fields.

Thanks again.
Regards,
María

Obviously, I am not Leticia but I think I know what she's referring to. And it has nothing to do with updating one's profile.

A simple example. An outsourcer posts a job with 2 language pairs - English to Spanish and English to French. Now, as a EN > ES translator I receive the relevant notification and open the link to check the job. But oh surprise! I am prevented from quoting because the outsourcer has stated that only native French speakers can quote on that job.

I have just gone through the "New job offer" form and I have found that, on the first screen, you can only specify a language pair - you have to proceed to the next screen to add a second or a third one. Given that the form looks rather complicated, with lots of fields to fill in and options to specify, I think it is highly likely that a careless or simply rushed outsourcer overlooks the possibility to specify different native language requirements for different language pairs. Since freelancers have been prevented from even seeing the ousourcer's contact details when they don't match the requirements for the work, this has happened many times. The site's answer was always we should contact a jobs moderator - but, as I understand it, they are not available 24/24 (which is only normal, they have a translation business to run and they need some sleep ), and it is possible that the deadline for quoting ends before the outsourcer has been warned about his mistake.

Another example (from this week): an agency calling for résumés to update its database which specified 2 or 3 different profiles they were looking for, say, translators with a specialization in marketing and translators with a specialization in technical subjects. But, to be able to quote, you actually had to include both subjects under your fields of specialization, whereas from the text of the post it was quite clear that they were looking for people specializing in either one field or the other, not necessarily in both.

Yes, I know that these kind of requests should be addressed individually either by submitting a support request or by contacting a jobs moderator. But, on the whole, I think that the current system is rather uneffective, at least from my (a freelancer's) point of view. But hey, it might be just me.

Best,
Eva

Job poster contacted earlier today. No response so far Jul 22, 2008

Hello María Leticia,

Thank you for providing me with the URL to the job posting with the problem. In fact, I had already received 2 complaints about the same job posting and contacted the job poster some hours ago, requesting that the job be edited (and offering my assistance in doing so). Unfortunately, I have not received any response from that job poster, so it looks like they, and anyone who wants to quote on the job, are out of luck, because, as currently posted, almost nobody is going to be able to submit a quote for that job!

If I may add a concern of my own to this thread:
I have many times been unable to quote on jobs because either the software required or expertise needed was stated as 'Other'.

Could we please leave 'Other' out as a restrictive setting? It is far too general too have any relevance anyway.

In my profile, I've chosen to list the software, languages and fields I actually work in, and I don't want to delete any of these in favour of some vague notion like 'Other'. So I'm not inclined to edit my profile to meet this 'other' requirement...

Thanks & have a nice day,
Margreet
