How do job quoting and directory ranking work at ProZ.com?

I have two fairly general questions on the functioning of the forum. Browsing or searching the KudoZ forum or the FAQ did not help me here.

- Is there a way of finding out by how much you were undercut on a job you quoted for, or at what rate it went?

- What determines whether if someone searches for a translator in your field of expertise you come out top of the search list or at least on its first page?

Thanks in advance.

Job quoting and directory ranking Aug 8, 2011

Dear penguin56,

There is no way to see the quotes submitted by other users on a job posting. You can only see your own quote, if you submitted one.

You can find information on how directory ranking is determined here: http://www.proz.com/faq/4442#4442

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Make yourself stand out in the fields you are interested in Aug 8, 2011

Welcome to ProZ.com!

An outsourcer who looks in the directory will see a whole page of names and links to profiles, but will not necessarily choose the highest name on the list.
The translator may not be available, or may not specialise in the right subject area.

Outsourcers look at some of the profiles, and the more you have to offer on your profile, the better your chances of being offered a job. Fill in as many details as you can.

There are other ways of making yourself visible: apart from KudoZ, joining in forum discussions, and attending powwows in particular.

Colleagues recommend each other to outsourcers when they cannot take on jobs themselves, but they recommend translators they know and trust.

If you are not offered a particular job, it is not necessarily because your rate was too high.
Whether you were undercut is not relevant. The cheapest translator is not necessarily the best, and good clients know that.

Keep trying, and do not set your rates too low. Work out a realistic rate for your work, allowing for administration, tax and expenses. It can be very hard to raise your rates later.

You can see a rate calculator here:
http://www.proz.com/translator-rates-calculator/

With certain reservations, you can see average rates here:

Another point to remember is that a good translation is worth the same to the client, no matter who does it. It does not make much difference whether you are a good student still at university, or have gathered a lot of experience: if the translation is done well, then the client will be satisfied. Don't undervalue yourself!

Experience is definitely an advantage, but those of us who have been around for a while still have to study and keep up with the latest developments in our specialist areas, and keep our skills up to date.

We all have to make a living, and must therefore charge realistic rates for our time and our work. Directories lead clients to profiles, but you need a good profile to make clients choose you.

Enjoy yourself on ProZ.com, and best of luck!
