Hi there,

Thought I'd use the conversion utility, but just the very thing I was looking for is not there: gallons to liters and vice versa. Could this be added?

Best,
Wolfgang

Google Jul 29, 2008

Google is also very useful for this kind of conversions. You just have to search for "X gallon in liters" and the result is shown within seconds.

Best,

Lüder

Certainly, I can find it anywhere else, but I thought it would be useful for the sake of completeness.

Thanks Wolfgang, for pointing this out, and Lüder for providing an alternative. I'll add this to our development queue.

Best regards,

Jared

Supported Measurement Units
Translator's Workbench supports measurement units from the metric, U.S. and British Imperial systems. For localisation purposes, measurement units can be transferred as is from the source to the target text or converted from one measurement system to another, depending on the setting you choose in the Substitution Localisation tab. The U.S. and British Imperial systems are combined in the U.S. Measurement System setting.

The measurement units for each setting are listed below:

Metric System
Length

Millimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), decimetre (dm), and kilometre (km).

Area

Square millimetre (mm²), square centimetre (cm²), square metre (m²), are (a), hectare (ha), and square kilometre (km²).

Mass

Milligram (mg), gramme (gr), kilogramme (kg), and metric ton (t).

Capacity

Millilitre (ml), cubic centimetre (cm³), centilitre (cl), decilitre (dl), litre (l), and cubic metre (m³).

U.S. and British Imperial Systems
Length

Inches (inch, inches, in), foot (feet, foot, ft), yard (yard, yards, yd), furlong (furlong), and miles (mile, miles, mi).

Area

Square inch (sq in, in²), square foot (sq ft, ft²), square yard (sq yd, yd²), acre (acre, acres), and square mile (sq mi, mi²).

Avoirdupois Weight/Mass

Avoirdupois ounce (oz avdp, oz), avoirdupois pound (lb avdp, #, lb), stone, short hundredweight (short cwt), long hundredweight (long cwt), short ton, and long ton.

Capacity (British Imperial Liquid and Dry Measure)

UK fluid ounce (fl oz), UK pint (pt), UK quart (qt), UK bushel (bu), and UK gallon (gal).

US Liquid Measure

US fluid ounce (fl oz), US fluid pint (pt), and US fluid gallon (gal).

US Dry Measure

US dry pint (pt) and US dry bushel (bu).

Temperature Conversion
Degrees Centigrade (°C) –default unit for the Metric Measurement System setting

Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) – default unit for the U.S./British Imperial Measurement System setting

Degrees Kelvin (°K)

So if you use Trados, the calculation will be made for you

Be careful when working with older texts Jul 29, 2008

The British Imperial gallon (used until relatively recently in the UK, Canada, etc.) was larger than the U.S. gallon. So when working with older texts, be sure you know which gallon was used before you make the metric conversion.

Since a quart is 1/4 gallon, I assume the Imperial quart was larger than the U.S. quart as well.

Imperial, US... Jul 29, 2008

The converter gives me 3.79 liters to the gallon.
Imperial is 4.56 L to the gallon.

If we're hyper-correct, maybe there should be two gallon converters?

And yes, the google converter works nicely, as does a silly little tag thingy in Word 2007 - if you write e.g. 300 m, a little tag will appear with suggestions of converting that value to feet, inches etc.

P.A.S.

Wolfgang is perfectly aware that he can find it everywhere else, he was just asking if this option could be added to the conversion tool as well. And it was. Period.
