Hi everybody, I have just printed the page needed to send a money order in the amount of USD 10.00 to pay for the registration of my domain name tobe hosted on ProZ. Why does not ProZ provide an hosting service as complete as the one I have on another server, and allow subscribing memeber to take full control of their disk space even whit a shell, beside the other services,as: ftp, web, e-mail account, etc. And why does not Proz.com allow members to rent as much disk space as they want or need to set up a very convenient virtual server on which prospective customers could upload very heavy files that cannot be transferred via e-mail? Ralf Lemster Germany Local time: 15:20 English to German + ... Basic service provided free to Platinum members | Jul 5, 2003 |
Hi Francesco, I'm sure you had a look at the ProZ.com hosting info page: What is the difference between hosting at ProZ.com and hosting at other providers? In today's Internet market, there are thousands of hosting providers to choose from. They all work the same way, by charging you a setup fee and then $10-$30/month to host your website. At ProZ.com there is NO monthly fee, you only have to cover the costs of registering your domain name. uote] Hope that explains it a bit. Ralf
Upgrading option | Jul 5, 2003 |
As far as I know, ProZ.com offers e-mail accounts in cooperation with everyone.net. Francesco Barbuto wrote: And why does not Proz.com allow members to rent as much disk space as they want or need to set up a very convenient virtual server on which prospective customers could upload very heavy files that cannot be transferred via e-mail? Actually, you have an option of upgrading your e-mail acount by buying more disk space (10 MB - 10$, 20MB - 20$, .... up to 100MB - 100$ / per year). It's up to you. You can access it through your ProZ mail account.

Unless it is something you would like to suggest (you are posting in "Suggestions" forum), you should address your question to Proz.com staff directly by filing a suport request. HTH

HTH ...Proz to upgrade its hosting services, providing Platinum members with the possibility to sign for a fullfledged Virtual Server, including: telnet (Do you know what it is?) access with a full featured Unix/Linux TCSCH shell (or any other shell to choose), ftp, ssh, etc. Virtual Server to be equipped with has much disk space as any particular member would need or want to. Prospective customers and clients could then upload the files they want to be translated to their chosen particular translator's virtual server and the translator could then download this same file an translate it. Then, upload his/her translated file to his/her virtual server and, at last, the customer could download the translated file from that translator virtual server. In fact, at times, you need to translated files bigger than 20 Mbyte, and that's not easy to deal with through e-mail attachment! I'm wondering? How do you transfer from/to your customer files that cannot be handled via e-mail? Moreover, valued Moderator, are you aware and know what I am talking about? From your answers, I guess you do not! ProZ.com hosting is a simple solution just for getting started | Jul 5, 2003 |

Our hosting service is a low-end offering intended for people who do not yet have a web site. We do not offer telnet access or many other things that most hosting companies offer, because we want to keep the service simple and inexpensive. In general, we do not recommend that people who already have web sites give up their current hosts and use ProZ.com--you'll probably be disappointed, because our range of services is very limited. So why offer hosting if we can not do it as well as others? The service arose because 80% of platinum members did not have sites, and we wanted to give them a simple and inexpensive way to get started. In my opinion, every professional should have his/her own website (ie. not http://www.proz.com/pro/123456 , but http://www.ukrainian-translation.com ), containing at least coordinates, CV, and services offered. I recommend you put your domain name at the end of your emails, on your business card, on folders containing documents that you deliver. You can also register with search engines and get the occasional direct job.

However, nothing hinder Proz.com from offering further enhanced hosting capabilities to members willing to pay for it. You can keep the basic hosting as it already is and offer telnet, shell, more server space and whatever against a fee. As simple as that! Please let me know, FFB

Hosting is not our core business | Jul 11, 2003 |
Francesco, I sympathize with your desire for more advanced hosting features. Like you, I would require shell access via SSH, and the ability to run custom code on the server, from any web hosting provider I was considering. But, as an advanced user, surely you recognize that there is a huge difference, from an administrative perspective, between running a "closed system" with a few thousand simple websites, and running an "open system" with several thousand shell accounts. Because hosting is not our core business, we simply don't have the resources to devote to administering such systems. And even if we did, we don't really have enough demand for such services to create the kind of economy of scale that a large hosting provider has. So we couldn't be price competitive even if we charged a fee for those services. As Henry has pointed out, there are many quality hosting providers out there today, so you should have little trouble finding one that meets your needs. Regards, jg ▲ Collapse
Ok. See the difficulties. | Jul 11, 2003 |
Jason, I see the difficulties of setting up and running a fullfledged hosting service. I've already a virtual server fully equipped, rented from an italian provider. I am looking for a new one as a backup resource, just to stave off any possible server-down scenario. I would only have loved to have a comprehensive account on Proz.com. Thank you for your clear-cut answer. Regards, FFB
