I can't get back home!

This may be a small problem and I'm not sure if it bugs anyone else, but could we please have a link back to "Home," i.e. http://www.proz.com/ from our profile pages?

This bothers me every single time; I have to use my back-button to get back to the 'normal' tabs.

That's not so bad if I've only looked at one or two of my profile pages. But if, for example, I logged into ProZ and went straight to my profile, when I go back (having to hit my back-button 20 times in the process), the home page has invariably expired (because of the login).

Can this be changed/added - please? It drives my crazy! Ok, thanks, I just needed to get that off my chest.

hear hear ;-) Dec 17, 2005

I read your post.
Then hit the back button to go back to the forum overview... and despite my autologin I was told that the page had "expired".
If I have only little time I sometimes skip reading the forums because it's totally annoying having to log-in again for each message since I'm not reading ALL the messages and therefore will not use the "next topic" or "previous topic".

I suggested this once... Dec 17, 2005

Yes, it would be very helpful.

Apologies - Henk Peelen started that forum, not me.

I though it was only me Dec 17, 2005

And kept quiet. As far as I remember there was a general Proz bar on top of the profile page and you could always get back to home page but it has been ages since is gone.

Several steps back in one go Dec 17, 2005

If you click the down arrow just to the right of the back button, you get a drop-down list of previous pages and you can jump several steps back with just one more click.

Why don't you erase from the toolbar? Dec 17, 2005

Any profile page looks like

http://www.proz.com/pro (or translator/ IDXXX/kudoz asked...

If you erase what is after ".com", you're back in the Home Page.

Or maybe I didn't understand the problem?

URL Dec 17, 2005

What I usually do to jump back to the Home page is that I delete the superluous part of the URL and keep only "www.proz.com"

You're not alone, Derek Dec 17, 2005

It's been annoying me for ages as well, especially when I go directly to my profile. The only ways of going to one of the other ProZ pages is via My KudoZ, picking one of the questions I asked or answered and there selecting the button for the previous or following question or going to the home page through my bookmarks. Why the profile is separated in that way from the rest of ProZ is something I never could understand.

Agree Dec 17, 2005

Yup, that bugs me every time as well. All they need to do (I guess) is add the "The Translation Workplace" banner (the one with the logo and 'Site time: ...' on each page) and the job's a good 'un.

Pending that happy day, can I suggest that instead of risking RSI with a frenzy of clicks on the Back button, you go to the URL bar, and just navigate straight to the home page (either use the dropdown list of recent sites or delete everything after "www.proz.com/" in the current address & hit send).

one more thing Dec 17, 2005

As far as I remember this issue was brought at the Kraków conference. The official explanation was that many potential outsourcers arrive to profile pages from outside, i.e. from search engines (mostly Google). In such cases, the translator's profile page serves as a mini-website, so there are no "external" links to the main proz.com site (where outsourcers would be able to find competing translators).

I think it was mentioned that proz.com will consider adding a toggle feature to the profile pages, so the member can specify if s/he wants to allow the main menu bar to be displayed or not.

Item in Favorites Menu Dec 17, 2005

Whenever I dive deep into any web site (not just Proz) and wish to get back home, I just click on the link in my Favorites menu.

Beats backspacing, or even rolling down the backspace arrow, as Oliver suggests.

I'm just calling 'em like I see 'em.

I know (and use) all the tricks/methods described by many of you - it just seems a bit cumbersome to me. I may be speaking only for myself, but I'd prefer to click on some link on my page than go to my favorites or delete a part of the URL.

Csaba, your explanation certainly makes sense. I don't think that most members would mind having at least a (small) link to ProZ somewhere on their profile page. It might even increase traffic (=jobs/questions =money/advertising) to the main site.

Hmmm... I think I'll suggest that question as a quick-poll.

Thanks for the comments though; sometimes it's relieving just to rant a bit.

BTW - I like Charlie's idea.

I concur Dec 17, 2005

It annoys me too, but I had already guessed why it was so.

Csaba gave a sound reason for not making it easy to get back to the home page from your profile page. The toggle idea seems to be the best solution.

How to get home quick Dec 17, 2005

Hi Derek,

Good suggestion.
For now I’ve found these ways to get home:

Click link I’ve saved on browser nav bar
Click any of the “Edit” links in profile, then ProZ banner
Forum tab/forum thread/banner
Portfolio tab/edit link/banner
Kudos tab/Edit notification/banner
Settings tab/Any link/banner

So basically as far as I can tell from your Profile if you click on any edit link you should get a page with the ProZ banner which will take you home. Or you could save a link to the homepage as a button on your browser nav bar, which will save scrolling through your favourites.

My home is my toolbar.. Dec 17, 2005

I added a dozen direct links to my Browser toolbar and one of them is ProZ.com.

Usually I save a page as a Favorite and drag and drop it from there.
