I\'ve just seen a KudoZ question posted on the Pro level by someone who admits to having no dictionaries: see http://www.proz.com/glossary/103230. Isn\'t it about time this site stops registering everybody who wanders in off the street? There are profile pages that don\'t even list language pairs.

Don't tar everyone with the same brush! Oct 31, 2001

Whilst I agree that it is annoying to see profile pages which don\'t even show language pairs, there can be reasons why a translator would be working without a dictionary!

I went on holiday earlier this year, and whilst I scaled down my workload quite considerably for the time I was away, I did accept a few, smaller translations.

Obviously I couldn\'t take my entire collection of dictionaries with me, so I took the two I use the most - one general and one more specialist. I figured I could rely on web searches, local libraries and - as a last resort - Kudoz, if I got stuck!

This doesn\'t mean I\'m unprofessional, as I still took the same amount of care over my translations as I do with all my work, it just meant it took me longer, as I sometimes had to search harder for the info I needed!

take it easy... Oct 31, 2001

A lot - perhaps most of the questions posted on ProZ are easy or even silly. The one you quote is not a good example though. Judging by the number of answers and possible interpretations, it was a serious terminological issue. And people sometimes have to work away from their dictionaries... Just take it easy and accept ProZ for what it is: a forum where both translators and non-translators can look for help.

Let me explain what it is I'm objecting to: Nov 1, 2001

not the presence of easy or silly questions but the registration (necessary to post questions at the Pro level, remember) of people who cannot be considered professionals. Perhaps the example I cite is not a good one, and perhaps we do find ourselves working away from dictionaries from time to time. But other examples aren\'t hard to find. I find it very strange that the only qualification for registering seems to be ability to access the site.
