Hi, I usually go to the home page first every day to see if there's a new poll and I always notice the "featured translator" above it. See more Hi, I usually go to the home page first every day to see if there's a new poll and I always notice the "featured translator" above it. We can see the name, their photo or logo and their tagline but there is no indication of language pair/s. For us it's pretty obvious we deal in Chinese from our name but for many others the name gives no clue as to the working languages involved. I think many visitors and outsourcers/direct clients visit the homepage before any other so if someone was looking for a particular language pair at that time they would see the featured person and it might just be timed right that that is precisely the language pair they're looking for. It wouldn't guarantee anything of course but I think the added details would increase exposure. To be honest I don't really see the point of being featured unless your working languages are listed and after all, that is what this site is all about. Apologies if this has been suggested before but I couldn't find any other references to it. Best wishes, Mark

I think I suggested long ago within a posting about "what do you look at first when you look at a translator's profile", so here's my total support for it. Claudia | | | Sophia Hundt (X) Local time: 16:30 Russian to English + ... You can also do it by making it into your tagline | Sep 24, 2006 |

While I agree that it would be extremely useful to show our Language Pairs, I am afraid it won't be possible to fit so many language pairs some members have listed on their profile. Maybe we could have our native language shown instead. Have a nice day, Monika
Sophia Hundt wrote: It could say something like: "Chinese to English Translator" instead of "Never missed a deadline" or "Reliable, affordable, always on time." I thought this to be a good idea but this is what it says when you go to edit the tag line: "Enter one phrase (of up to 40 characters) that summarizes what makes you or your agency special. This line will appear in lists on the site. (Examples: "The fastest", "10 years in patents", "Also a lawyer") Don't enter language pairs and other basic information that appears elsewhere in your profile." Maybe for those people with multiple working pairs it could list the first two and then have the "+" sign to indicate there are more available just as it appears on the forums. Failing that, yes I agree that native language/s would be an improvement. Thanks again, Mark (edited: messed up the quote!)

I agree too. | Sep 25, 2006 |
I decided it is very difficult to find a meaningful tagline that is so short, so I give my main language pair. Some people can guess by the way I spell my name, but it is no guarantee. There are times when I want to give a different message, and then I have to change it. I second this proposal, too. To use as little space as possible, ISO two-letter language codes may be used (as far as such codes are defined) - see http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/langcodes.html -, together with an arrow to indicate the direction. Including the languages is a great idea. I would also suggest including the main specialization fields (two or three). If the problem is space, I would even use a smaller-size picture. After all, although I think it's good to have it, it is definitely not the most importat thing when choosing a translator
Chinese Concept wrote: Could the "Featured Translator" on the home page show language pairs? I second that (I'd third and fourth it, too, if I could). An additional point in its favor is that it's a suggestion that I'm pretty sure would be relatively easy for the ProZ IT staff to implement. Bonnie

Hello all, I fifth that. In addition, I posted a suggestion which I can't find right now due to all the postings, in which I ask Henry to feature more than one translator at the time, perhaps 3-5. Why not choose translators randomly among 3-5 different language combinations and feature them in the front page? That would give us all more visibility. 15 minutes is not long enough, one person among thousands doesn't make a dent in this profession. Choose different language pairs, feature those members for at least 30 minutes and move on the the next group. What do you think? Cheers. Choose different language pairs, feature those members for at least 30 minutes and move on the the next group. What do you think? Cheers. Belkis Hi Belkis, I think that is a great idea and it also inspired another idea along the same lines as soon as I read it. If we could just be realistic for a moment, how likely do you think it would be that a potential new client would visit Proz, go straight to the homepage, see a featured translator in the language pair they're looking for, go to their profile and offer them the job? I think highly unlikely. Not to put a downer on it because I think any exposure for any length of time is great in itself. How about like you said, putting 3-5 featured translators on the home page but in addition featuring 3-5 featured translators on a language pair search or on any search for that matter? Direct clients and agencies will come to Proz looking for a translator and they will want to search. They'll search on the basis of language pair or speciality or country or whatever criteria and currently they are presented with a list of translators meeting their requirements. As it stands the list is split into paying members and non-paying members with the paying members listed first...fair enough. How about out of that list of paying members a few are highlighted as featured, totally at random to make it fair, forget who's got the most kudoz points, just a continual random selection of featured translators who meet the searchers criteria. I think that would give everyone their fair share of exposure and more importantly it will give them the exposure when they most need it and when their services are in demand. Best wishes, Mark (edited for additional (p.s.) (p.s. I'm going to take this suggestion and add it to the main suggestion thread on the home page...the one about "If I was Henry" etc. I will credit Belkis for the the inspiration of course. My thinking is that this thread appears old in the "recent posts" forum so is unlikely to be read by many more people. Also it seems to me that these suggestions seem to be falling on deaf ears because there has been no response whatsoever from anyone above. Even a courteous "thanks for the suggestion but it's a crap idea" would suffice but we haven't even had that. I suspect this happens all too frequently with new suggestions! Maybe in Henry's own thread it might have more impact.)

Hello and thank you, Your idea has enhanced my first concept, I consider your input very valuable and in my opinion this is an example of "team work". Visibility is a much needed feature and you have improved my suggestion. Thank you very much and may this be for everyone's benefit. Success and all the best! Belkis P.S.
