I don't know in detail, but something to do with the way the code for the character input is Aug 5, 2003

When I answer for Kudoz questions, I have some rectangles instead of characters. This problem does not occur in Word files why ?

....displayed in Word, in the text editor used to write the kudos question and on the kudos page itself when it comes out. If the code for that character is not supported in one way or another then it shows up as a 'square'. Presumeably your computer is set up to support the code for the character (since you wrote it) so it must be the page text editor or the actual webpage that doesn't "understand" it - assuming changing the 'view encoding/character set' selections on your browser doesn't transform 'squares' on the kudos Q.web page into correct characters (or are there webfonts your browser isn't set up to support? - or am I missing the point and you are getting lots of rectangles where you have viewed characters before?)

I was puzzled when I posted to a forum Georgian & Cyrillic characters in ArialMS-Unicode (as an experiment) and they came out as a chain of '??' question marks (at least they weren't '!!!' like Snoopy's friend Woodstock uses )- the puzzle being that the Georgian characters were displayed correctly in a profile page but the same characters came out as '???' in the forum, and the Cyrillic as 'gibberish unicode codes' in the profile page (doesn't matter as other fonts are 'normally' used for Cyrillic) and '???' (like the Georgian) in the forum.
I don't know how these two fonts would appear in a kudos question (yet:-) )
but would be very interested to know why there is a difference - out of curiousity if for no other reason (although it's useful knowledge)
Best wishes

I hope someone will give you a proper explaination of the technicalities (unlike my amateurish attempt)

PS. Georgian letters in ArialMS Unicode do seem to appear alright in kudos Q.s as well (from a limited experiment).

PPS. after what must be some kindly changes behind the scenes at the site:

Georgian Characters in ArialMS Unicode

Russian Characters in ArialMS Unicode

With thanks for the changes which have been quietly, and kindly, made so that they can appear - on my computer at least
