My task bar is loaded with icons: 11.

The icons disappear, but they re-appear at start up.

I would like to get rid of whatever may or might be slowing the system down.

Will appreciate any tips.

Thanks!

msconfig Apr 18, 2002

Click on Start button (low left corner of your desktop), select Run, type in \"msconfig\" (without quotation marks), and hit Enter. Depending on what version of Windows you are running (I\'m assuming it\'s Windows, otherwise disregard everything here), you will be presented with a System Configuration Utility window with several tabs on top. Select the one saying Startup, and in the resulting window you will see a list of all the programs that are launch themselves automatically on your computer once you start it. Some of them are essential, most are not. If you recognize a program that does not in your opinion deserve the right to be running in the background at all times, simply uncheck its respective little box on the left, and that will prevent the program from launching automatically next time when you reboot. If something is suspect, but you are not completely sure what program the executable file represents, try searching for this file (Start>Find/Search>Files or Folders) to see in which Folder (and to which application) it belongs. If after doing so you are reasonably sure it won\'t hurt anything, uncheck the corresponding box (and wright it down somewhere on a piece of paper), restart your computer, and see if everything is allright; if something is amiss, you can always go back to msconfig and put the check mark back where it was, but most probably, you will never miss this program.

Good luck to you!

go to Start, choose Run, type MSCONFIG, then enter, then choose Startup and uncheck items that you are not required.

Hope it helps.

System tray or Quick launch? Apr 18, 2002

There are two parts to the Windows taskbar - the system tray (which all of the answers from the colleagues refer to) and the quick launch bar. If it is the latter (usually on the left, next to \"start\"), you simply right-click of any of the icons there and choose \"delete\". Once you\'ve gone through all the ones you want to delete, restart Windows.

Thank you all! :)) Apr 18, 2002

I just went through the steps and everything worked OK.

You know, I have four or five thick excellent books on Windows, but I never seem to get the time to read them and, when I do, I usually hit the wrong page, so thanks a lot to you all!

Anyone know how this works in Win2K? Apr 18, 2002

That\'s a very useful tip but I\'ve noticed it works in Windows 98 and not in Windows 2000.

X-Setup for Windows 2000 Apr 18, 2002

In Windows 2000, you may use a freeware tweaker program called \"X-Setup\" from Xteq.

See http://www.xteq.com/products/xset/index.html for more info.

You're quite right, Colin Apr 18, 2002

My laptop uses Windows ME and these instructions do not work.

Anyway, the one that had 11 icons on the task bar was my desktop and I now am delighted.

Thanks again!

Whoops! Apr 22, 2002

Sorry. I said they worked only in my desktop and not in my laptop. Wrong. The instuctions Natalia gave us, also worked with the laptop that uses Windows ME.

Thanks again, Natalia!
