The road to.... Mar 11, 2009

I appreciate the good intentions behind it, actually, but I just consider it unnecessary, trivializing and disruptive. The fact that Henry & Co. continue to brainstorm new ways to enhance the site and what it offers is good, but sometimes this effort might benefit from more feedback. I think that was part of the function moderators used to serve, but now we in the general community can try our target practice skills.....

I am considering to become a paying member again Mar 11, 2009

I really envy you guys, first you got the nice red Ps that is a clear sign of professionalism, and now you've got even nice golden stars! The last time I got a star was in Weight Watchers...

I do regret not extending my membership a year ago!

Could be confusing - I don't think it is needed Mar 11, 2009

As most of the others here, I also fail to see the point of this star when the membership ribbon is there, and the "since YYYY" note is there most of the places next to the name.
The only reason I can imagine introducing such a feature is to encourage people to KEEP their membership continuously, otherwise, the star will be taken back...

I don't think people need that kind of encouragement to pay their membership fees. Those who like the site, and feel it is a beneficial service, will pay the membership anyway.

If there was no such sales/marketing motivation behind it, then it is yet another pretty graphic contributing to the ever-growing clutter.

One more thing to consider - a few years back, there WERE stars in profiles, but those marked satisfied clients. There was no WWA, instead there was the star feedback system. For that reason, and also because on many other websites stars mean some sort of quality or reliability measure, I don't think this is a good idea to use a golden star for marking length of membership. It could be easily confused with some sort of indication as to the quality of work*, or reliability** or "online citizenship"*** of a person, while we all know that length of membership has nothing to do with that.
(*, **, *** Yeah, I just realized those are the things assessed in the Pro program, which has a red P wax seal...)

So, all in all, I don't think this is a good idea.

Surely this can be deduced by date of joining Mar 11, 2009

The date you became a member is already shown. Now hovering over the star gives the number of years' membership. I'm no mathematician but I can work that out for myself and I'm sure everyone else can, too.

For a trip to the dentist, maybe Mar 11, 2009

If not a gold star, then maybe a smiley sticker or lollipop.
Not needed on ProZ.

Roll two flags into one Mar 11, 2009

Basically, this is the same information as the "Member" (aka Platinum) information, only more so, as it were. So how about combining the two? For instance, for short-term members show the customary ribbon in blue; for long-term members show the ribbon in yellow (golden).

I Like It Mar 11, 2009

but we are not all the same, so many can prefer not to have it.

I consider it as a sign of long membership, a sort of fidelity sign, and find it a nice initiative.

Like I liked in the past the "Platinum" icon, and all the following.

Anyway, given the fact that many do not like, the possibility to opt out would be a good idea.

Rather childish Mar 11, 2009

You could make it even more infantile by adding a number for the number of years in ProZ.

Reminds me of eBay Mar 11, 2009

Inspired by eBay's rating system I would like to suggest that ProZ.com uses different stars and colors to indicate how long a translator has been a ProZ.com member:

Yellow star = 1 year of membership
Blue star = 2 years of membership
Turquoise star = 3 years of membership
Purple star = 4 years of membership
Red star = 5 years of membership
Green star = 6 years of membership
Yellow shooting star = 7 years of membership
Turquoise shooting star

Where is my green star?

I only wanted to sing my song well,
So I could ring a small bell in your heart
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I was on the road, sleeping between lorry lights, oh no
Stone-drunk and cold, heading into a bad night, yeah, yeah
Just another bean in the star machine, hi ho, here I go, here I go

I never wanted to be a star, buy my mum a Ferrari car
I only wanted to run my own race,
So I could win a small place in your heart
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Nature found a way, it picked me up off the dark side, yeah, yeah
Showed me another day, it made me sing 'I think I see the light'
Not another bean in the star machine, oh no, this time I won't go
I never wanted to be a star, I never wanted to travel far
I only wanted a little bit of love
So I could put a little love in my heart.

Oops. Wrong stars, Kevin.

(edited to remove a religious symbol - yes, a star with six points)

Quite right. Pentagrams are OK I suppose. After thinking about it, I guess there is potential in that eBay concept
