Dear Florencia, I was the one who supported the most such an idea on your poll some time ago, but not the way you build this first competition is really bad. It seems nobody read my mesages there.
1. Why do you exclude non-paying members?
2. Why do you exclude languages?
From ideas I have given on the thread of the polls:
a. translation could be from the most representated languages into the others: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Hindi, Chinese (at l... From ideas I have given on the thread of the polls:
a. translation could be from the most representated languages into the others: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Hindi, Chinese (at least).
The competition could be splitted on the non- English speaking fora. For those who have not a forum (English and Indian people, aso.), another one (e.g Off topic) could be a solution.
People could participate and also vet in the forum where they belong with their pair.
A winner could be named for every language pair.
b. all registrated users of the site should participate and vet.
Also:
A contest could be also in form of a quiz, crosswords on different languages aso.
Small awards could also be offered to the winners: a nice diploma, some postcard or piece from a country, a partial membership on ProZ, some promotional gift from ProZ if there is such a thing (calendar, pen, agenda, T-shirt). ▲ Collapse

Probably just as well there is no prize.
Was I the only one to notice that, as regards the prizes for the draw for completing WWA:
a) the winner of the free trip to Budapest lived in Europe (cheaper airfare)
b) the winner of the laptop lived in Argentina (cheaper delivery, with Proz being based in Argentina)
Just an observation, make of it what you will

Apart from the fact that English native speakers are excluded from translating into their native language (they are not excluded per se, but could translate into their foreign language), I think this is an excellent idea.
I like the procedure being proposed and a prize although it would be nice is not really necessary, IMO. Maybe next time? You could also argue that translators who specialise in fields other than literary translation (like myself) are excluded and so on. I thin... To use Lexical's expression, an appalling idea.
And as Lexical points out later, labelling someone as the "best X->Y translator" is potentially completely misleading to uneducated clients, given that the conditions and basis for this "fun" competition are spurious.
This sort of "exam" is usually conducted on the basis of carefully selected judges who apply very specific criteria, in an endeavour to be as OBJECTIVE as possible.

Another category of people excluded are those who happen to be snowed under with paid work at the time of the contest - this is arguably a sign that they are the best translators around!
Let's not get too excited about this proposal, though. Nobody is forced to participate if they don't want to.

And I think to be fair, a) if you had to pick a single SL, surely English would be the most inclusive? and b) it does say the FIRST contest.
TBH, when the poll said "fun", I thought there would be a twist, like excluding the letter "e" (yes, yes, I know it's been done) or a rule that said the text must include each letter in alphabetical order, or something....

This is precisely our vision of this first contest. We know that by concentrating on a set of language pairs we are leaving out a lot of site members, but we could not imagine a practical way of implementing a contest covering all possible combinations.
This is just our first contest and we needed to get started someway. We will include other combinations in future contests and of course we are open to ideas to improve as we go.

Hi everyone,
Regarding the prizes, it would be considered for future contests, but again, this is our first contest, so we don't currently have any prizes slated. And Charlie, the laptop still had to be shipped from the US of A, and our winner of the trip to the ProZ.com conference in Buenos Aires last year was from Latvia, so yes, make of it what you will

Hi Hipyan,
This would have required a source text in any listed language, and besides it would still leave out other combinations such as German to French.
Finally, in response to what Niraja said, how about translators who work in a target language that does not have a specific forum on ProZ.com? Would ProZ provide for the forum?
We are contemplating only currently active non-English forums for this first contest.

1. Winning such a contest has nothing to do with others not being good. It is supposed to be only a contest for fun, though it could show some features of the participants, some special talents (e.g literar).
Regarding "the not educated clients" - it is a fun contest. If any client would be smart enough to observe some translators and use the contest as a "sample", it is even better. For newbies it would be also a reward to get a new client/job.

I am appalled by requests such as "I want a prize! Preferably expensive international air travel!", "Why aren't all possible language combinations on this planet included?", "I don't pay any fees but I want all the privileges anyway!".
Get a grip.
Many colleagues have indicated interest in such a contest. Now Proz.com has initiated it. What is your problem now?

Yes, it could be based on non-English fora and a common fora for those who do not have one.
Please read my suggestions!
Would there be a problem with the texts in German or French or ther languages? Why? There could be different texts for every source language.
And nobody answered: why only members allowed to participate?
