Hi all,

After seven years of treating all ProZ.com members as one group (all "translators"), and receiving requests and suggestions (on this list and from general members) to cater more specifically to those in other categories, we are now preparing several new membership options. Specifically, we are designing two new membership options: one for companies and one for students.

In other words, reflecting the fact that there are independent professionals, agencies and students using ProZ.com, a separate membership and profile format will be available to each category, each with it own ribbon and rights. (For example, it makes sense that students should not appear in the directory. We will work out things like that.)

Of course, we will be incorporating some of the suggestions that have been made over the years on the moderator list and in the public forums, on the themes of student and corporate membership.

As part of the process of forming the membership options, we floated a corporate membership offering to some companies last week. A few companies have already joined, and the new purple ribbon has begun to appear at points throughout the site as a result. A separate post will go into more detail about the new corporate membership.

There are many issues to sort out as we move forward in introducing student and corporate membership types, including delineation among the membership types, requirements for qualifying for each, etc. (Suggestions have also been put forward that additional membership types be considered, such as "non-industry / layperson", and we are not ruling out such additions in the future.)

But I would prefer not to get into such details in this thread. This post is intended only to give advance notice on what is definitely coming: corporate and student membership. For this reason, I am making this post only as an announcement. We will invite specific feedback in follow-on threads concerning corporate and student membership specifically.
