First, I apologise because I'm writing in English...
Second, I need your help- I need your advice: which on-line (preferably free) resources I can use in order to learn Romanian language basics... Resources like on-line dictionaries, grammar books, trainings, lessons etc. would be very beneficial to me.
I like Romanian language very much and I would like to learn to speak the language (at least basic commands).

One day soon, who knows, I might even visit your beautiful country and I would hate to be an ignorant tourist who expects that all people should know his/hers language...
Sorry if I am bothering you and thanks for understanding!

Dear Sanja,

The best thing about it is that it' s absolutely free and you will get the chance to improve your pronunciation and vocabulary. My experience with foreigners (Spanish, Hindi and English speakers) has taught me that pronunciation may give you some headaches but that only depends on the common sounds that you can identify between your mother tongue, the languages you acquired and Romanian.

As for grammar...resources are scarce but I'm still looking

Good luck, and if you need any help...don't hesitate to ask.
Anamaria

Thanks Sep 5, 2007

Thanks Liliana and Anamaria!
I know it is hard to learn a language when you don't have the opportunity to speak with the native speakers, however I will learn the basics and perhaps go on a holiday there and practicise my newly acquired language skills...
I hope it will not be too difficult since I learnt Latin and French laguage (in highschool) and it is, as I understand, a good starting point for me.

good start Sep 5, 2007

Hi Sanja

Yes, that's a good starting point, as Romanian retains the Latin declension and a good part of the vocabulary is of French origin.

When I was studying Romanian at the University (my father is Romanian, I can speak this language pretty well, but I wanted to know more about it), the teacher showed us the evolution of the words from Latin to Romanian.

When I was studying Romanian at the University (my father is Romanian, I can speak this language pretty well, but I wanted to know more about it), the teacher showed us the evolution of the words from Latin to Romanian.

A couple of examples in order to understand:

Lat: caballus > rom: cal (intervowel B weakened and eventually dropped, double LL simplified in one L, the final -US also weakened and dropped)

lat: stellam> rom: stea (same concept as the one above: double LL simplified and eventually dropped, the final M weakened and dropped).

I had studied Latin at high school and it helped hugely to understand the evolution of both Romance and Germanic languages. So you will see that it'll be easy to remember some Romanian words.

Pa! (which means "bye" )
