People here don't mind to help but when the figure stating years of your experience will show 0 after 1 you'll know that your question has no merit:-). Can you name a single best bread for every stomach? No hard feelings, OK?

Hi John, Though I translate from Russian (but into French and not into English), I don't use any particular dictionary as regards legal translation. I mostly use the web to find ressources. Everybody has their own taste, so there is no "the best dictionary". Don't be offended by this answer, OK?" Ho hard feelings, OK?

Спасибо, Олександр, но все же Not "not good", this could sound really offensive, but rather "incorrectly put" - it's impossible to rely on any single dictionary, or purely on dictionaries for that matter, and the knowledge of such sort comes with experience only to anyone regardless of potential professional capabilities. Джон, я считаю, что русский язык чрезвычайно сложен и поэтому с искренним восхищением отношусь с тем, кто владеет им как иностранным. Желаю Вам всяческой удачи! Ирина ▲ Collapse

Вы очень правильно говорите, но смысл вопроса не был "с помощью какого словаря можно перевести какой бы то ни было юридический текст?", а просто "какой самый лучший русско-английский юридический словарь?" Вот и все. Неужели нет такого словаря в России? Марк

it's a nice question! | Mar 20, 2006 |
this is a question which in Russia is usually equal to a question: if there were a fight , what will win, an elefant or a whale?
Sounds like a fairly straightforward question to me | Mar 21, 2006 |
Is it impossible to rank dictionaries in Russia? In the US, if you ask what the best legal dictionary is, the answer is generally Black's. Best general dictionary? Kenkyusha's "New Japanese English Dictionary." Some smaller dictionaries may be better suited to narrower subjects, like Kogyo Chosakai's Plastics Dictionary. On the other hand, some people may disagree with the dictionaries I've mentioned here. But they would at least acknowledge that the general consensus is that these dictionaries are the best in their categories. So explain to me why it's impossible to rank Russian-English legal dictionaries. Are they all exactly the same size and so perfectly made that none is better than the others? Marc ▲ Collapse
I must say Im surprised this question has generated so much response without a single Russian dictionary being mentioned. Are there any decent Russian legal dictionaries at all?

I use Mironova's En-Ru law dictionary and find the latest Lingvo (11) (www.lingvo.ru) extremely good (although not necessarily for Ru-En legal dictionaries). I trust you are familiar with Multitran (www.multitran.ru) which can be very good if used with judgement. Good luck with your search! Let us know if you find a good dictionary. ▲ Collapse
