Хотел посмотреть, не обновилось ли чего в глоссариях Microsoft и пошел по ссылке ftp.microsoft.com/msdn/newup/glossary/ , но по ней ничего не было. Может, кто-нибудь знает, где сейчас можно найти эти глоссарии?

I have seen a few postings about this in some translation-related news groups, but I've been surprised that an event of this magnitude has largely gone unnoticed. The so-called Microsoft Glossaries have been available on the Web for the last 12 years for everyone to use free of cost. Of course,
we've mentioned before that the term "Microsoft Glossaries" was always a misnomer since they really were translation memories of most of Microsoft's translations of their product interfaces.
Last week Kristin from Microsoft sent me this message:
"After working through several challenges internally, last week we replaced the CSV files on the ftp site with a document that provides users with our most up-to-date terminology. The file contains over 9,000 English terms,
plus the translations of the terms for up to 45 different languages. This will provide significantly increased reliability and accessibility for our users, given the issues we've had with downtime on the ftp site in the past. If you go to the ftp site, you'll see that it now redirects you to:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/MILSGlossary.mspx.
We have already begun work to expand the functionality of what we are providing for users at this site. The updated version will include product information, definitions and search functionality. We hope to have this completed by
November.
"The files that were previously available on the ftp site can still be accessed on MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/). In order to
access the files (which are in the same CSV format as before), users will need to have at least an MSDN Operating Systems subscription."
Here is what this means: The translation memories that used to be available in CSV format (comma-separated value format) for free have now been placed on the MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) site. To become part of that
network, you will have to pay an annual fee for the various available levels. The MSDN Operating Systems subscription that Kristin mentions and that permits access to the translation memories costs US$ 699.
What Microsoft has done for the community at large, though, is to replace the hundreds of translation memories in the different languages with a true glossary. The glossary contains slightly more than 9,000 English terms and
their translations into 45 languages. Now, not all terms are translated into all languages; in fact, no language has all the terms translated. As far as I could tell, French has the most translations with 7,548, and Urdu has the least with 45. All the other languages are somewhere in between.
Unlike the translation memories (which were previously known as Microsoft Glossaries), this data is not only computer-generated but actually verified, so the reliability is significantly much higher... ▲ Collapse

Новый 45-язычный "собственно глоссарий" - он лучше, удобнее в работе, чем те глоссарии в форме Translation Memories или нет? (Самому нечасто приходится ими пользоваться, и держу их под рукой для нужных случаев, поэтому пока особо впечатления для себя сформировать не могу.) Просто когда-т... Просто когда-то собирался и не загрузил англо-немецкий глоссарий (в виде Translation Memories), так вот думаю, искать его у кого-нибудь или пользоваться настоящим 45-язычным (его я, кстати, уже загрузил).

В старых базах было под 650К терминов
Да, там много повторов, но много и длинных фраз - ну пусть там реально порядка 50К терминов
В новом ~3550 русских терминов

В итоге я подключил En-Ru выжимку из нового глоссария к своей базе старых глоссариев MS, так что ничего не пропало ▲ Collapse

Периодически приходится заглядывать в англ - укр глоссарий. Он, в отличие от рус - англ, в старом варианте был примерно в таком же формате, как и новый (был еще столбец Definition), поэтому сравнивать проще. Экспортировала обе таблицы в Access и после несложных манипуляций получила сл... See more Периодически приходится заглядывать в англ - укр глоссарий. Он, в отличие от рус - англ, в старом варианте был примерно в таком же формате, как и новый (был еще столбец Definition), поэтому сравнивать проще. Экспортировала обе таблицы в Access и после несложных манипуляций получила следующие цифры:
в старом глоссарии было 2140 терминов (все с переводом, подавляющее большинство с толкованием), в новом - 3398. Общих терминов оказалось 1286 (сравнивались, естественно, по англ. варианту), т.е., 850 шт. в новый не попали вообще. Из этих 1286 перевод есть для 533 (750 шт. перевода лишились), из них примерно в половине случаев перевод в старом и новом вариантах не совпадает, причем далеко не всегда по причине плохого старого.
Может быть, не стоит обобщать на другие языки, но мне кажется, лучше иметь оба варианта ▲ Collapse
