Not scam but spam Aug 14, 2008

In Thunderbird I always click on scam, but nevertheless they arrive in the Inbox and Thunderbird does not put them away automatically. I wonder why not. The same applies to Viagra Official site, I always put them into scam but the program does not learn.
Any advice?

Have you turned on the feature 'unwanted messages' (or something like that) in Thunderbird? It's much more effective than the scam feature. Turn it on in the options, and use the button 'unwanted' whenever you encounter a spam message.

It is a quality spam though Aug 14, 2008

The reason some anti-spam filters don't mark it as spam is because the quality of the spam is quite good. I think only one of the links in the message body leads to the advertised site (or a phishing site, or whatever it is). Everything else is quite genuine. And the text makes sense, probably because it is copied from a real article.
And today I received a "MSNBC alert" Needless to say, I have never subscribed neither to CNN, nor to MSNBC.

Yes, Jennifer, that's ust what I meant ! Aug 14, 2008

Of course, I get Spam, but so far no viruses on the Mac.

If anyone has info about how to clean out these new viruses (from my friend's PC), I still haven't found the antidote....

Dear colleague,
Just try to download the free Avast antivirus, and ask it to make a complete clean of every part of the computer.
Here's the French link to Avast : http://www.avast.com/index_fre.html
You just have to click on "langue" on the top right corner of the web page, and chose your language.
The free "family" version is sufficient, normally.

To break the breaking news with OE Aug 20, 2008

As they change regularly the "apparent from" line and the "object" line, everytime they adopt new headers for the "from" and the "object" lines, I create a rule in Tools > Message Rules > Mail (I have the FR version, so not sure that your version displays exactly my translations of the FR one).
Then, click on "new", 1) In (1) "Select conditions", select "When the FROM line contains persons". Then, in the lower part of this window, click on the coloured underlined part (In FR, it reads "contient des personnes"), then in the new window which opens type the "apparent from name" in the top box, I mean for instance 'Daily Top 10' (do not type the real sender address, as this address changes with each post), and click on "Add"; AND 2) When the screen goes back to the Mail Rules window, still in (1) "Select conditions", select the option "When the Object line contains specific words". Then, in the lower part of this window, click on the coloured underlined part (approx : "contains specific words"), then in the new window which opens type the exact content of the object line, for instance 'CNN Alerts' or 'Weekly top news'. Respect the upper/lower cases that appear in the object line. Click on "Add".
3) Back to the Mail Rules window, go to the box #2 "Select actions". Then select (approx) "Do not download from the server".
4) Click on "OK"
So, you will never see these series of messages again.
But, do not forget that everytime they create new headers for "from" and "object", you have to create a new rule. It takes only 1 minute to create a rule, and it will spare you exasperation and risks for your computer.
Of course, never open those messages.
Hope it will help
Catherine
