Receiving porn-pop-ups despite Ad-Ware

I have started getting porn-ad-pop-ups when I'm viewing ProZ. I have Ad-Ware, am I doing something wrong or can I do something else to avoid these nuisances.

Thanks
LInda

Have you deactivated the Windows Messenger service? Jul 18, 2004

Hi Linda,
Please provide more details:

Which operating system are you using?
How do you access the Internet?
Have you deactivated the Windows Messenger service?

If the popup is a small grey box, it's most likely exploiting the Windows Messenger service - this is completely independent of any site you're viewing.

Best regards, Ralf

Gibson Research Corporation is a reliable place to test if this service is running.(Do not mix this up with MS Messenger, the instant message programme!)

The first thing to understand is that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble."

See also: http://www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm for disabling the Plug n'Play service. You can test your system here.

Popup Killer Jul 19, 2004

I run "Popup Killer" and I do not have this problem, so maybe that's why. For details, try [email protected]

But this is only one of several anti-popup softwares. For a review of them and a choice of downloads, try http://www.popup-killer.info/

Thanks Jul 19, 2004

I am very grateful for all the prompt and helpful answers and am
in the process of trying out the various suggestions.

Sometimes "nose has been out of joint" when my "perfect" KudoZ answer didn't get chosen or was critized, but the help offered to this problem has really made my day.
And, hopefully others will also benefit.
Thanks again.

Google toolbar or Opera browser Jul 19, 2004

Linda,

If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, I suggest installing the free, useful and unobstrusive Google toolbar (http://www.google.com/toolbar), which includes a pop-up blocker. (The latest Yahoo! toolbar also claims to block pop-ups, but I haven't tested it).

I hope this helps.

Been there! Jul 19, 2004

Time ago I received pop-ups which nearly drove me crazy. In spite of my Google toolbar pop-up killer a few messages came back and back again on my screen with intervals of two-three minutes.

OK, you might find other programmes even for free to liberate you of this intruder... but if anything else fails, try Hijackthis!

Good luck!

How to fight pop-ups and viruses Jul 21, 2004

I use to antiviruses Norton AV and AVG, and to anti ad-ware/spy-ware, Ad-aware 6.0 from Lavasoft and Spybot S&D, permanently updated, and alternatively, daily run. I had problems, but now my comp is clean without erasing and reinstalling operation system. And also, use something else than IExplorer. Recom: Avant Browser or Opera.

Mozilla Firefox Jul 21, 2004

I use Mozilla Firefox browser and it has a built in popup blocker. You can set it to allow popups from selected sites if you need to, just like the Google toolbar.
