John //// doesn't tell which language his wife uses! Oct 11, 2010

Hi Lysander,

I got exactly the same letter yesterday.
I was not going to respond, but googled his name anyway and came across with your post.

Someone is just collecting the info on interpreters?

Mika

Received the same Oct 11, 2010

Not only he doesn't tell which language his wife speaks, he doesn't even bother to check in which country he is writing.

Infact he doesn't even know that I am Italian, cannot surely go to the USA to interpret

Wow those scams start becoming ridicoulous....

P.S. Update, I understand now, apparently he is writing to the ATA members.

"John /////" email - scam alert! Oct 12, 2010

I received the same exact email three times today. Smells like a dead fish. He doesn't say what language his wife and children speak. Why would he not provide that information? He wants YOU to tell him what languages YOU provide services in. Are his wife and kids miraculously going to be proficient in whatever language you interpret? How does he communicate with them? Why can't he interpret for them himself? Don't fall for it.

He just sent me four fake money orders Nov 1, 2010

I just got four FAKE money orders from this guy for more than what we agreed on. I guess he is going to write me soon to tell me to send him the remainder.

The problem with scamming the scammer Jan 19, 2011

[i]Unfortunately, I live in a rural area and my bank is charging me a fee of $20.00 in order to cash your check and I do not have the money because my account is currently overdrawn. If you would kindly send me this fee via Western Union as soon as possible, I would then be able to cash your check and send you the balance.

If the scammer knows what he's doing, he'll arrange for some other victim to send you the money.

I received the same message and I am not an ATA member.
I'll make a print of everything and bring it to the local police office, just in case...

I've received the same "job offer" - here's how it plays out Jan 28, 2011

I'm in Spain by the way

He sends a cheque for *your fee* plus 5,000€ - supposedly for DC's travel expenses. The idea is that you keep your fee and transfer the rest via Western Union to "his travel agent" - another name - in Kensington High Street, London.

I was in my bank this AM, the cheque is probably bogus - it's drawable on a Spanish account (not "Almond Foods") but contains anomalies

I'm going to the Guardia Civil this PM to report the case

Gets worse Feb 1, 2011

I actually got a quote approved, blocked a week of my work time and had several email discussions with this person. I thought it was a little odd, but I've had real customers who have worked out fine this way. I did find the whole thing strange when there was no company info at Company House UK, that this was a senior accountant without email on their cell phone, and that they rich enough to book an interpreter for a personal holiday yet there was no info about this person on the net. The day he was supposed to turn up with his family, surprise, no call. Suprise, the hotel he has booked to stay at has no knowledge of this reservation.

Needless to say, I am pissed off. Luckily, I didn't lose any work time and got work straight away, so no financial losses. I'm mainly just bewildered by the whole thing. But won't lose anymore time worrying about it.

Just so you know: this person is presenting as David Carrick a "senior accountant at Almond Foods UK". I am not a member of ATA so no connection there, but I am a member of NZSTI and SFT.

Hello,

My name is David Carrick; I will be going on my annual leave on the 28th of January & my wife and I, along with our 2 children will be coming to France on holiday for 7 days. We will be staying from Sunday 30th of January 2011 to Sunday 6th of February 2011. My wife who does not speak French, requires the services of an Interpreter/Translator (French-English) for 5hours per day for the duration of our stay. Your duties will be mainly to escort/guide her and our two children during shopping and sightseeing. We will be renting a car, so transportation will not be a problem.

If you are available to render your service, I would greatly appreciate it if you could advise the languages you specialize in and your coverage cities. Please let me know the total costs of your service for 5hours per day for 7days.

I'm 43 years old and a senior accountant, working with Almond Foods Limited here in the United Kingdom. I look forward to hearing from you, have a great day and God bless.

Many thanks,
DXXXX CXXXXX

Dear Sasha,

Thanks for the note. We will be visiting Montpellier, for the entire duration of our stay (30th Jan - 6th Feb) and were staying at the HOLIDAY INN HOTEL. Address: 33 RUE CLOS RENE, MONTPELLIER 34000. Your duties will be to escort/guide my wife and two children (ages 7 and 10years) when they are going around Montpellier, for shopping and sightseeing, this could either be in the mornings or afternoons. We will be renting a car, so transportation will not be a problem. Please let me know the total cost of your interpreting service for 5hrs per day for 7days, all other charges included.

Best regards,
David CXXXXX

same job offer Feb 1, 2011

I´ve also got an e-mail from Aikman Farkus on 10 January 2011:
"Dear Sir/Ma, I have a 21,733 words, approximately 47 pages on "SOCIETY" (ANATOMY OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION) to be translated from English to Slovak. Let me know if you are available and how much it is going to cost." Yesterday I have received very strange cheque on 65 000 EUR (insted of agreed 602 EUR) in envelope with Russian stamp. I´ve checked internet for more information about this person and now my suspicious is confirmed...
