Good afternoon! (From Texas)

Question: I translate into English, and when doing so Trados won't let me type any diacritical marks in the English text. This is necessary for place names, etc, and I get around it now by copying and pasting the word with the marks from the source text to the target. Not a big deal, just wondered if there was a way to allow my target text to allow the marks while remaining in English mode.

Thanks!

Taylor

Keyboard Layouts Mar 26, 2008

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'English mode'. If you want to use non-English characters you could add another keyboard layout. There's even an English International keyboard layout that you can switch with the normal English keyboard layout.

You can use these these instructions to add each language layout besides United States-International[/url]
How To Use the United States-International Keyboard Layout in Windows XP.
The link includes a table:

' (APOSTROPHE)---------C----------------------------Ç
' (APOSTROPHE)---------e, y, u, i, o, a-------------é, ý, ú, í, ó, á
"(QUOTATION MARK)---e, u, i, o, a-----------------ë, ü, ï, ö, ä
`(ACCENT GRAVE)------e, u, i, o--------------------è, ù, ì, ò
~(TILDE)------------------o, n-------------------------õ, ñ
^(CARET)-----------------e, u, i, o, a-----------------ê, û, î, ô, â

If you have Vista, click the Start Orb and type: Regional and Language Options and click on it, then go to the Keyboard and Languages tab, click on Change Keyboards and add as many keyboard layouts as you want.

Once they're set, you will see the current language code next to the System Tray. You can use the mouse to switch between languages or use Alt + Shift.

I hope that helps.

Claudia

What Claudia says works, I do it all the time, and I am doing it now.

This table might help Mar 28, 2008

There is a table at the following URL showing so-called "alt-codes" - numbers to type on the numeric keypad while pressing Alt on the left of the spacebar.

http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm

A couple of examples (Alt key + Four digits):

á Alt+0225
à Alt+0224
ë Alt+0235
ñ Alt+0241
Ñ Alt+0209
