I while ago I encountered the (Seemingly common) problem of a popup footnote window being closed manually, making me lose my Trados toolbars. But then I had the (seeminly rare) problem of being unable to recover them, despite having tried every solution I could find. Since then I have "got by", but with various other small issues too.

I have finally decided it is time to reinstall Trados - but I don't know how!

Please could someone give instructions on how I go about reinstalling it?

Many thanks

Wendy

All you really have to do is go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, find your Trados installation, click on it, click the button that says Remove, and then once the remove operation is done, find your install file (somewhere in Crogram Files) and launch it (this will start the install process). I would make a backup of my Trados program folder before doing this, but usually, even if you don't, all your Trados folders (TMs and documents) are preserved, except of course the ones that were overwritten by the installation.

You may want to try repairing your Trados installation before actually reinstalling it. That usually does the trick. Follow the steps above, but click on Change instead of Remove.

Return the license - Trados 2007 Apr 13, 2008

Hi Wendy,

To add to what Viktoria has written, I should recommend to return the license before uninstalling.
Go to SLD Trados 2007 > License Manager > View Activated Licenses, clic on the license and then in the Return button.
Once you have reinstalled the program you´ll be able to activate it again.
Regards,
Marina

frustration overload! Apr 13, 2008

Thanks Viktoria - I did as you suggested and it worked fine without any loss of data.

Unfortunately, however, it has not resolved the problem (= I have the Trados tool bar, but no menu. The flagman appears for a split second when I load Word, then disappears and cannot be retrieved. Therefore although I can use Trados, I cannot use shortcuts or see the menu. I have tried playing round with the Templates until the cows come home, but to no avail).

I may therefore try Marina's suggestion too.

Otherwise, I'm going to have to see if Trados themselves can help...

Missing Trados Toolbar in Word Apr 14, 2008

Hello Wendy,

We have a couple of articles in our online knowledge base, http://talisma.sdl.com, which should fix your problem.

I would suggest the following article:

http://talisma.sdl.com/article.aspx?article=1466&p=1

This will give you instructions on resetting your Trados template.

Otherwise, you can try the following solution:

http://talisma.sdl.com/article.aspx?article=1550&p=1

This is mainly for missing Word toolbars after manually closing a footnote.

I hope these help.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell

Other solutions needed Apr 14, 2008

Hi Gareth,

I have actually tried all of those fixes before (but will happily try them again), but unfortunately they have not worked.

I am at a loss as to how to solve this problem, and am getting very frustrated, since the inability to use keyboard shortcuts slows down my work considerably.

I should repeat the issue - I HAVE the toolbar, but NO Flagman, and NO menu.

Is there anything else you could suggest?

Many thanks

Wendy

Let's try this... Apr 14, 2008

Hello Wendy,

Thank you for your reply.

In this case, I would recommend that you delete the normal.dot file, located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Template

Then restart MS Word.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

Gareth

still no joy Apr 14, 2008

I tried deleting the normal.dot, but still no luck.

I should add that when I first open Word, and everything is loading up, the flagman and menu do appear for a split second, but then when it finishes loading, then disappear and I can't retrieve them.

Back to the drawing board?

Another possible solution... Apr 15, 2008

Hello Wendy,

Thank you for your response. Could you please go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

Please delete any Multiterm7.dot files you may have in the folder, and make sure that the only template file in the folder is Trados8.dot (or Trados8.dotm for Word 2007).

Restart Word and see if your menu and flagman have returned.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell

SUCCESS! Apr 15, 2008

Oh my word, YES they have!!!

Thank you very very much for your help.

One final question - what does this now mean for the Multiterm toolbar? Admittedly I don't use Multiterm as much, but it is handy nevertheless to have it in Word.

Thanks again

Wendy

Multiterm7.dot file Apr 16, 2008

Hello Wendy,

I'm glad it's working.

In earlier versions there was a problem with the Multiterm7.dot template, which has been fixed in the latest updates.

I will send you a copy of the fixed Multiterm7.dot file, along with instructions.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell
