Perhaps you know the problem: A customer sends you glossaries in Excel for reference and now you have to open several windows and switch back and forth to find the right term while translating. Wouldn\'t it be nice to include these glossaries into the Term Recognition function in Trados Workbench? We have found a solution to this problem and would like others to benefit, too.

This new tool converts Excel sheets via CSV format into import files for MultiTerm. So far, the tool is for internal use only and not yet for sale, but we offer to convert your files at low cost. You can choose between obtaining TXT import files for MultiTerm or a complete MultiTerm database. 1-5,000 rows per Excel sheet will only cost EUR/USD 5.00 net and will save you a lot of time.

If anyone is interested, please request more information at converter@tetralingua.de, our special email address for this new tool.

Best regards,

Céline

Trados FAQ Apr 14, 2003

I\'m not sure if I\'m missing something in your solution, but Trados have published instructions on how to convert Excel spreadsheets and Word tables for quite some time. Click here for instructions.

There are also a number of macros available in the Files section of the TW_users group.

Of course tables can also be converted with macros, but their programming and application is quite time-consuming. Moreover you will probably run into problems once you try to apply them on very large glossaries (i.e. those from Microsoft). Our tool also contains some features to avoid duplicate entries and you can control the use of certain characters that have special functions in MultiTerm.

The tool is quite complex, it\'s difficult to summarize its benefits in a few words, but running lots of macros was no real solution for us, that\'s why we developed this program.

Best regards,

Céline

The Converter macro available at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cat_conv/ (developed by Sergei Mouraview) automates the process of converting Excel glossaries into a Multiterm import file. I use it all the time and it is excellent (and FREE).

You define columns exactly as you want records defined in your Multiterm database and the macro handles the rest.

Multiterm has the ability to handle duplicates on import. For more information on this, check your manual or contact Trados Support.

FWIW,

Karin Adamczyk

P.S. There is only one glossary in the Microsoft files (French/English) -- the rest are files with sentence pairs that should not be imported into a glossary, but into a memory. The above Converter macro can also convert Excel files (such as the MS glossaries) into a Workbench memory import file.

MT Convert is just fine Jun 9, 2008

Hi all,
I've been using MT Convert for quite some time and after learning some tips and tricks I've found it very useful. I don't think there is real need of using a different tool.

A little help Jun 9, 2008

Dear Emanuela,
Here is a link where you can download a pdf document kindly provided by Jerzy Czopick where he explains step by step how to convert an excel glossary into a Multiterm Termbase. Is in chapter 12

http://trados-training.doku-trans.de/SDL%20Trados%20Training%20EN.pdf

I remember Vito Smolej made a video tutorial about this which was available via his profile, however I've checked and unfortunately it is no longer available. Maybe he puts it back in a near future.

Hope the link above helps you.

Mariale.

Multiterm Convert and Multiterm User Guide Aug 8, 2008

I learnt how to convert an Excel file into a Multiterm database via Multiterm Convert in about 20 mins, by reading the Multiterm User Guide.

Instructions are written black on white, and after step one, go on step two, that is as difficult as that.

Why don't people read User Guides?

Yours,
Mathieu.

MultiTerm Convert is included in the MultiTerm package, which is part of the Trados package, so there's no extra cost involved at all - except, perhaps, for the time it takes to learn how to use MultiTerm Convert.
