Is it not possible to have Trados/MultiTerm raise an alert when a glossary entry from the source is not present in a translated segment?

In Word, no way. In TagEditor, you can run the Terminology Verifier plug-in. But it makes sense only when the translation is finished and you can select only one termbase.
TE, Tools -> Plug-ins, activate and configure the Terminology verifier. Then hit F8 to start the termcheck.
BTW. This option is available in DVX from eternity. When you finish the segment, you get an alert if you activate the terminology checks.
Cheers GG
