Hello everyone,
I am sorry for the panicky tome but I am in a bit of a situation here...

I have a translation of 30,000 words to turn in by Monday. I was happily working away with SDL Trados. I am quite a new user of this program but it seemed to be going OK. So far, so good. But then AGHH! my computer crashed. As in, the power went dead. And I thought 'thanks goodness I clicked 'save' two minutes ago.

But to my horror, when I connected the computer again and tried to open the file to carry on., it said 'unexpecte file format'. I simply haven't got the time to re-do it all over again! Is it possible to recover the damaged file?

Millions of thanks to whomever can help me!!

More details, please Jul 27, 2008

Hi "wieck81",
Please help us to help you by providing some more details:

- What file format are you working on?
- Which editing environment are you working in (Word, TagEditor, ...)?
- Where exactly (=in which application) do you get the error message?

If the file you're working on is corrupted (which may well be possible in the event of a power failure), you should still have the work done so far in your TM.

Best regards,
Ralf

Error details Jul 27, 2008

Hello Ralf,

First of all, thank you for your prompt reply!

I was working with SDL TRADOS on an .itd file.
The editing environment is Word.
The error comes when I try to open that particular file. (the .itd)

That is, a)I open the SDL wizard and try to do it from there, or b) I click on the actual file. On both occasions I get the same message: unexpected file format.

Thanks a million for your help!
All the best,

wieck81

How do you come to open an *.itd-file in Word? Jul 27, 2008

The ending "itd" belongs to SDLX, not to Trados and above all not to Word.
Were you working with SDLX?
In this case I'm not sure, how it is, but Ralf is right - in the worst case you have all your work in the TM.
So please tell us, if you were working with Workbench (Trados) or SDLX.
It looks like it were SDLX - and in this case I'm of no help, as I'm not familiar with SDLX.

Best regards
Jerzy

error details-cont. Jul 27, 2008

Dear Jerzy,

OK sorry correction:

I was indeed working with SDLX. Reason for my confusion is that I am really new in this program and I am still a bit bewildered by all the infertace, tag editors, format paint, et. etc. I still have to come to terms with.

Thanks for pointing our my mistake!

Best,

wieck81

recover work from TM? Jul 27, 2008

By the way, if the work is saved in the 'TM', what is the TM and how do I access it to recover it?

Thanks a million!

I would setup a completly new project with same TM Jul 27, 2008

During your work you have fed up the TM you created/selected for the crashed project.
If your itd file from that project won't open, try to set up a new project with the source Word file and select the same TM as previously. Than you should be able to use the matches from TM.

BTW, it looks like you should think about investing some (few) money in an UPS system. With an UPS (unbreakable power supply) such disaster wouldn't have happened to you.

Autosave for ITD file Jul 27, 2008

1. You can use Autosave function for ITD file. In SDL Eddit, go to Option > Automation > Save every ..... minute [You set the autosave time duration]
2. In the worst case, an ITD file can be opened in a text editor. Then you can copy & paste required segments for later use e.g. in TM or new trnslation files.

Regards,
Soonthon L.

Notebook PCs handle power interruptions well Jul 31, 2008

You may also want to consider buying a notebook PC. As you probably know, they can run for a considerable time—up to several hours—despite a blackout.
